What's your experience with wood/coal stove and a normal burn

Very seldom do flames make it past the upper edge of the baffle in the firebox. I much prefer to dump the heat into the house than up the flue. Gotta wonder what you're burning!

Just wondering, today I was burning a wood stove with no pipe to cook off the new paint, and noticed the flame jumping past the 6" neck above the firebox.,
not a lot but still out of the box. also this is an older stove the only "baffle" is an ash shelf.
 
The zogger smogger got some flames up the pipe. No idea how far though, doesn't make it past the elbow into the flue that I have noticed, so maybe..1.5 feet or so.
