Great thread. I think it all depends on where you want to take your career. If you are planning on managing trees on a larger scale (municipal, utility, forestry etc.) then a forestry or urban forestry degree would be more appropriate.

If you plan on sticking to traditional arboriculture which is managing trees on a more individual level, then a degree in botany or horticulture would be more fitting I think.

No need to go all the way to the mainland, by the way. UH here on Oahu has great programs in Botany and horticulture.

The degree will give you a strong foundation and allow you to see the whole picture more clearly, not just the tree. You've got to have the climbing too, but you can always volunteer at Lyon Arboretum! Good luck!
