can someone tell me what year this is?? i got it as a parts saw. its all there sept the flywheel. gonna see how good it runs then look for a 288 cyl, all ready have a new OEM 288 piston

these saws run very close to the 288, unless there's issues with the topend, i'd keep it the way it is.

Looks like some parts already have been changed, the chain brake/clutch is a newer one, not from 1985, and none of the top covers in the third picture is the original. Looks very nice though!

so its a 85???? what number says that, i know about the chain brake, and the 288 top cover, whats the one thats on the saw from?? no i havent checked compression,i dont have the flywheel.also i see where theres 3 didderent cylinders listed

The other top cover likely is from a 281xp, or it is a different 288xp one.

It is from 1985, because of the 5 at the beginning of the serial number, and the fact that it is a "silver" tag - the two next digits are the week.

That's the old piston to cylinder fit (clearance) system where "in a perfect world" piston and cylinder clearance was calculated to within a few ten tousandths of an inch.....Pretty much all pistons come as an A/B clearance now.......
