    #### Monsanto

He's not talking about GMO "organisms or viruses" he's talking about the inability of soil organisms to breakdown a highly overused and often mismanaged herbicide. Will you still be willing to call the man a hack when you start seeing yield plateaus that you can't explain...then it it hits your...

nerve damage from extended saw use?

I suffered the same symptoms after years of milking cows, general farming and after putting in a OWB - cutting 15 cords of wood every year. Finally got an MRI and had one bulging and 1 herniated disk. Doctors gave me the options of surgery or steroids to get the swelling in the discks down. A...

I hope we're half way tru winter

3/4 of 12+ cord pile left. I finally have a stockpile pile of well seasoned wood(mostly ash) after burning a lot of crap for a couple of years. Next project is to get the wood shed built and my stove moved in.

How much bar oil do you use.

Bar length has everything to do with bar oil consumption. My ms270 with a 16" bar uses about 1/2 a tank of oil per tank of gas. ms361 with a 20" bar uses close to a full fill of oil per gas fill.

    wood ash uses

You take soil chemistry a little personally don't you Oly. I find your reply to be a little acidic.

    wood ash uses

No problem Treeco. Makes me curious what kind of soil test guys like Oly do which shows "toooo acid" after an ash application. Defies basic laws of chemistry. Blending the ash with composted manure before applying works well on our heavy clay soils.

    wood ash uses

Retake that chemistry class Oly. Wood ash has a high pH. (it's alkaline) like lime. Anything that is acidic has a low ph. If you add wood ash to soil-soil pH goes up not down. It does have some minor fertilizing value-adds some potash mainly. If your soil is normal (pH=7) or above - don't...

Who Uses Their Log Splitter Vertical?

Vertical on the big stuff-which is not that common here in west central Minnesota. Took down a 26" elm and split it all vertically-hard on the back. 99% of the time we're splitting ash horizontally.

High performance glass questions: replacement windows

2 big pictures approximately 4 X 6 pictures which were spendy as we put in a combination - putting a double hung and a solid glass together. 4 were about 4' X 4'. 4 were 32" X 4'. 1 was a basement slider 28" X 4'. I got these from our small town lumberyard. They also repped Jeld Wenn, but...

High performance glass questions: replacement windows

We've had the opportunity to put new windows in 2 homes in the past 5-6 years. Being from Minnesota-we went with 2 Minnesota suppliers. We put Marvin windows in our previous home in St. Paul. They were (if I recall correctly) double glass low-e argon filled windows with a U-factor in the .30...

    CB 6048 Door Rope Question

My door gasket is in need of replacement. A neighbor with a boiler doesn't think that it would be wise to replace in the middle of the heating season. His concern is that the silicon caulk that Central Boiler sends with the rope won't set up under heat and pressure. Any opinions or hints on...

My hat's off to you guys up north

Got room in Key West for me. It was -29 here in Minnesota this morning-it's now a balmy -18. Most of my eggs froze today-amazing the hens lay at all. Even my loyal yellow lab after 1 trip out to feed the stove this morning made it clear that if I was out today - I was on my own.

    Stihl MS270 and decompression valve

I have the 270c and it has no decomp valve. Never needed it. Since I got my 361 the 270 doesn't get much work, but when I need it-it is an easy starting saw.

    Water filter for OWB

Poor man's solution I live in an area of Minnesota where the groundwater has a high iron content. I found a great cheap idea for filtering the rusty water for my kids pool that worked great. Basically I took a 2' long piece of 4" PVC pipe - plumbed in garden hose fittings on covers for...

Had a nasty run in with my Fiskars SS...

I've got points for the man too. Good reminder. We're fighting the rain here in Minnesota trying to get the crops in and everyone needs to be reminded to stay safe even when we're hustling to beat old man winter.
