    Climbing boots, what you using??

I use Merrel hiking boots when using gaffs on removals.Merrell boots have stiff soles. Stiff soles don`t hurt my feet , that makes me happy. Light weight Merrels don`t fatigue me like work boots do. I use old running shoes when rope climbing. There is no need to spend $400 on wesco .

who wears thier ISA jacket when bidding a job?

op, never. In the last 15 years I was asked to show arborist credentials 5 times. All form municipalities that required a certified arborist. In the last 5 years I can not remember being asked for creds at all. 100% of my business is referrals. I dont even advertise in the phone book...

    Sharpening Gaffs

I sharpened my gaffs 3 or 4 years ago with a flat file. I might sharpen them again in 3 or 4 years from now if they need it. Gaffs dont need sharpening much actually. " I dont always use gaffs, but when I do, I prefer Buck pole gaffs, and Dos Equis".

    fiskars super splitting axe

I have the Fiskars SS and Pro Spliter. I sold my 37 ton hydraulic splitter this spring because it took up to much space. The Fiskars are fantastic. they hang on a wall. I might get another powered splitter some day but Im in no hurry. I split 5-10 cords a year.

    cover wood or not

Build a proper wood shed . nothing will touch it, not rain not snow, it will get crispy dry. And stay dry. Building a wood shed is simple and cheap. Best money spent ever.

    Who wears chaps while climbing?

Chaps in a tree, never. I dont understand chaps in a tree.In a tree my cuts are at chest and face level. A hockey mask and chest armor would make more sense.

    Wear Gloves?

I wear gloves often but not always. The cotton /blue rubber palm gloves give me extra grip for climbing and I like that. I also use them for spitting firewood with an axe which I do often. I do not wear gloves while feeding the chipper. Unless its really cold.

Buying a new saw for serious firewood cutting!

TXTree . If you need money you would make more money mowing grass in suburbia than cutting firewood. Im in PA where it gets really cold for a long time and firewood is not worth it. There are better ways to make money with less backache. Cut grass , hang drywall, install electronic dog fences...

    whadja do today?

The dog and the wood shed are new. You have to admit Fred is cute. THe Wood shed holds 30 cords. MDS good memory, I am a part timer, a certified and insured part timer. But 25 hours a week at this does make me a part timer. Hopefully next year I`ll be doing this 20 hours a week. My...

    Stump Removal, what to bid?

To OP . Pass on it if you dont have a big machine. I have a small Rayco 25 hp grinder. I do fine on multiple small stumps, I will grind 25" or less and sub out 26" and larger to a local stump grinder that has a big diesel machine. I prefer 20" or less. No sense in killing my myself and my...

    Spurs ??????????????

For all day climbing Its the boots and saddle you wear , not so much the gaffs. My main gaffs are steel Buckinghams short pole climbing gaffs. 1 1/4 inch spurs. I have the 3 inch Bucks too but never use them. I do a lot of large tree pruning so Im usually in sneakers. Great boots if you can...

    whadja do today?

That shed holds next 7 years of wood , 23 cords. I have another shed closer to the house that holds 2 years worth , 7 cords. Small house, we burn 3.5 cords a year. Being years ahead with very seasoned wood and an EPA stove really keeps the wood usage to a minimum. Oak and Black Locust helps too.
