460 hands down for me if i had to choose one ....but i like old school non strato "traditional" muscle ..In reality the 660 is the only choice for me!! ..and the 660 is the only New stihl i can get without flippys. lol

My kinda man!!:hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:
I LOVE my 660. The 1 saw I will never sell......

Damn. I'm never good with final decisions. I know either saw would be good as I would not even come close to the limits. Something about the 460 just screams do it- but from what I've read about the filtration system of the new strato engines seems cool too. Fuel mileage is good to an extent. I don't make a living cutting- so I doubt I would really notice the cost savings- and at the end of the day if I had to fill the tank 1-2 extra times- is that really a big deal?
M-tronic and AV is a nice luxury. M-tronic kind of worries me a bit in the repair department though. Anyone know what a new module costs in the event one should go bad down the road?

At the end of the day all I'm really after is a saw that when taken care of, will last me at least as long as my projected life of the boiler (somewhere around 15-20yrs). The fact that stratos haven't been around that long (from what I've read, anyways) makes that a big unknown. Though they could be like comparing a 70's big block to a modern engine. Tell someone back then that we'd be driving modern engines to 250K miles on a regular basis and they would've laughed you out of town.

When I first started looking, $1K for the saw/bar/chain combo was the imaginary line I drew. I'm still sticking with it. Though after tax the 460 would pass it up slightly. 660 is way to big size and weight wise for anything I want to do.

066/660 tested ,proven, rock solid performance out of the box .. the sixty six is and always will be Stihl's best pro saw

Power to weight is phenominal! Prolly the best saw Stihl ever made. And thats sayin somethin!! Like you say, incredible right out of the box. I think its the best runnin saw Ive ever had out of the box. Maybee a 372xpw was a little better, but Im not sure. That 660 would just flat out rip right out of the box.

its a no brainer decision in my book mate 660 all the way ! there is no second choice in the stihl range for me ....but others have a budget to keep too and other opinions to decide on. I just love the old proven ways ,when your on to something good ya stick to it !!

660 - power to weight ratio (Kg/Kw) is 1.4 , 7.3kg at 91.6cc
460 - power to weight ratio is 1.6 , 6.6kg at 76.5cc
441 - power to weight ratio is 1.5 , 6.6kg at 70.7cc

too right brother ...just like the old big block V8 with a 4 barrel carburetor and points ...damn bullet proof and simple, and it'll flog the #### out of the fuel injected computer controlled Hi-tech new generation show pony down the road when tuned right.

I have fallen prey to the siren song of the sixty six.

No it won't! I like the good old days as much as anybody, but let's get serious here for a minute. I have owned and driven a number of old V8s and they were great, but the reality is that MOST auto manufactures are pulling similar (or much better) power numbers out of V6s and even 4 bangers. Sure you give up a good bit of simplicity, but you get better fuel economy, MUCH better reliability, MUCH better longevity, and way more power out of a much smaller package.

I agree. As technology improves we are seeing better efficiancy and power out of smaller engines. I still think its a win win with either saw.

LOL, now it getting absurd, 660, LOL, really, the guy cuts a little firewood, isn't likely to be a pro athlete, and therefore would cut more wood with a 70cc saw than with any 90cc saw given to him, due to the weight of the 660's, common sense here people. Hell I cut professionally, and have/had two modded 660's, they never get used, because there is zero increase in production for the effort of carrying a 90cc around and filling it up every 4th tree, cutting firewood would be an even worse showing for the 660, but you would have to have some wood cutting experience with both saws to know that kinda stuff, instead of letting your testicals get in the way of common sense, but this is a chainsaw forum so common sense isn't always to common, as there is always CAD to deal with, LOL.

I've got a modded 084 with a pretty good power to weight ratio, and I'd spank most anyone with a little 70cc saw cutting most anything with a 28" bar and less, what the heck does power to weight ratio have to do with cutting firewood if the saw weighs what a 660 does, thats just sure sign of lack of experience and ignorance to advise such a thing.

Do any of you even read the advice here by those with more saws and more experience???? Several "advisors" here actually have modded 660's, so there is way more power to be had with that choice than some little stock 460, yet the owners of those modded 660's that have modded 441's would rather run the modded 441 and know that they are going to cut more wood, than the modded 660, do you get it, we are way, way past the "traditional muscle" of a stock or modded 460 ......... whatever that is???? Traditional Muscle, LOL, the 441 M-Tronics has a much better powerband and fuel mileage, one operator here says a 441 is double the mileage and another is at a 2 to 3 ratio of the 460 (either way its pretty substantial), plus it has much better AV and air filtration, basically, as I have said many times the 460 wins cookie cutting competitions by seconds and loses real world cutting by minutes, therefore common sense would lead one to understand why a person could cut more with a 441, due to its several other benefits.

I just think its funny, how, praisers of the 460 love its suposively more powerful platform, yet you will not cut anymore wood with it, due to its, "traditional" poor fuel mileage, air filtration system and AV system, a comfortable operator will cut more, its just common sense ..................... plus the 460 costs a lot more than a 441 with all the bells and whistles, I've broken 460 mounts, I've never broken a 441 mount, ever and I'm hard on them when they get pinched.

My opinion and experience, have fun with that,

Sam

Come on, you got to admit the 660 is very cool.

Just kidding I say go with the 441 as well. You will hardly ever ask yourself if you got enough saw, as the 441 will be all you ever need for a big saw.

But..... when you do ask, just remember some here pointed you in the right direction.:hmm3grin2orange:

I have to agree with Slamm here. Most cutting I do is done with a 50cc and 70cc class saws. The 066 only comes out for stumping or the really big stuff. The 70cc saws are higher revving, lighter, and easier to handle.

Jim, are the 441 and the 460 pretty darn close in weight? I thought they were. Alls Im sayin is the guy isnt cuttin for production. Either saw will be fine. He may have more fun with a ported 460. Thats all. Heck their both great saws.

All my saw are stock aside from MMs. I prefer 24'' b/c or less for 70-75cc saws for hardwoods. When i step up to a 28'' bar i prefer the 660. I am only cutting firewood though not production based. If i worked in the woods all day it would definately be a 70CC ported saw.

I think we are getting to involved in talking about ported saws it get confusing for the guys that are talking stock saws.

That may be my fault. The guy (Adam) wanted either a 441M or a 460. IMO, I advised to get a 460 and have her ported. thats all. Sorry to get this off track if i did,

They are the same weight, I am partial to the 441 as I have one but I would own either as I am a collector/firewood guy. I use my 260 and 441 for all my firewood needs, the AV on the 441 really helps me cut longer with my bad neck, keeps my hands from going numb a lot longer than standard rubber AV. The great fuel mileage is also a bonus, I have never filled up during a firewood trip, between the 260 and 441 I can fill a truck and trailer before I run out of gas, at least in the 441 anyway. I was just kidding on the 066 even though I have one.
