There was an ice storm, last winter, which barely missed us here. I went to a saw skills thing last April. A woman who has a crosscut and does volunteer work on trails said she taught her husband how to use the other end of the saw. The ice had raised havoc with trees in their area. They cleared out their driveway 100% with muscle power. It took a day for them to do.

Awesome. Vernon is where I used to go skiing before I destroyed my knees! :(

We'll stay vocal on here as $hit hits the fan. Hopefully you don't get banged too bad either.

Oh yea definitely, hopefully its not too bad, but by what everyone is saying, its going to be :msp_thumbdn:

I just picked up some 91 octane ethanol free, 3 bottles of 2 gallon 2 cycle mix, and ALMOST walked out with a MS441. Dear lord I wanted it, but man the price tag was tough to choke down for a hobbyist like myself.

Got 3 chains ready to go, 2 jugs of B&C oil, going to prep some mix late tomorrow night (after the gas station calms down)

Stocked up one some food/water. Got some candles and charging all my lantern batteries.

Fought some old lady for the last case of water. ( I won)

I've got a strange feeling about this one.

The 260 crapped out two days ago. Was cutting fine, then over-reved for a few seconds and shut down. I'm thinking fuel line leak leaned out out, causing the over-rev and now it is fuel starved. Didn't run fast for more than a few seconds and pulls over just fine, so I doubt I cooked anything too severely. Fortunately, I already anticipated this scenario and the 441 is fine. Maybe I can use this as an excuse to get a back up back up saw!
Wind has already blown down a standing dead tree that I was planning on dropping.

We'll fuel all the vehicles today and fill up a few Jerrycans in case the power is out to the gas stations. Generator working well, will change the oil if I find the time. Other than that, I think we are good to go.

Yet another recommendation: Aladdin Mantle (kerosene) Lamp.

Very good emergency lighting. Burner runs very clean, with blue flame- odorless. Puts out much more light than non-mantle lamp, and up to 3200 BTU/hr. (You can clean off mantle remains if one gets damaged, and run it solely as a point-heater.)

To avoid problems of flame stability, avoid brass burner. Seriously.

Many different designs, some very attractive. Not cheap, but very valuable when needed. Fortunately they use the fuel that is my favorite woodstove accelerant.

Chainsaws ready, generator ready, fridge full of beerand meat, gallon of red wine, 30 gallons of gas. I;m ready!!

:rockn:

...I guess the latest is saying that for us along the shore here in Ct, that we are going to get the high winds more than the heavy rain bands...who know until it arrives!...Got the Honda Gen al ready and sharpened up some chains last night....Still have to get fuel for the truck and also buy the very last loaf of bread in the state!

65 to 70 MPH wind gusts predicted for my neck of the woods. :msp_scared: More than enough to make a big mess.

Mostly set here. Saws of course are ready. Got 5 gallons of SEF 50:1. Going to hit the grocery store tomorrow @ 8:00 when it opens and get some extra stuff, but nothing critical needed. 2 of my 4 flashlights could use fresh batteries, but I bet there isn't a battery in the store. :msp_rolleyes:

Store was might busy again this morning. Went through a lot of chain, as many guys were buying in quanity. Few more each on the 346's and 372's. Couple 365's. Couple Ranchers, 562, 353 and a 450.

The winds have already blown over the dead pine I was planning to cut before it fell on someone.

I've switched to beer to conserve the emergency water supply.

Am in the predicted snow section of the storm. With leaves still on the trees, and several inches of snow possible, doesn't look promising... :msp_sad:

Love the snow, but kinda hoping this one misses us. If our power goes out, with everyone's else's possibly going out, it could be weeks before we would get power back. Sadly, no portable generator will help in that situation, as we'd never be able to get gas for it as there are already lines forming at some gas stations in the area. Besides, no power, no gas anyway because most of them don't have back-up generators. Those that do can't keep enough gas supplied when they are going through literally hundreds of gallons per hour.

But the saws are gassed up, need to get some more Moto-mix for the 441 though. Got some wood stacked to keep it all nice and toasty in the garage if needed... :smile2:

Generator is on the fritz, will have to tinker with it tomorrow, hopefully can get it straightened out. Guess will go ahead and stock up on gas, good thing is that its cheap...

got my spare chains and bars and parts in a crate, gallon of mix, spare oil and 5 gals of 93 in case i have to make more mix. 2 gals of bar oil, and 6 saws all under the tonneau cover of my little S-10. gonna put the generator in tomorrow when i get up to my shop, and mount my chain sharpener on a piece of wood so i can clamp it to the tailgate. i'm hoping i did all this for nothing. if this thing turns west tomorrow like they say, anything that runs at WOT(who needs it to idle in an emergency anyways) and can spin a chain in my arsenal will be somehow shoehorned into my little truck haha. i'm worried about 1 monster swamp maple and 1 monster catalpa next to the house, 2ft thick stone walls are great but there big trees...hoping my help will be for others and not myself.

on a good note i have a fresh bottle of jameson and plenty of apple cider to help me wait it out before i go on my rescue mission if needed.

Pray for it to be rain and not snow....if it snows we will all be living in 1850 again for the next two weeks.

Storm Prep

I cleaned gutters today. Got fuel for generators yesterday. Put new fuel tank on the
generator that was leaking, had it here just took time to do it today. All the saws are ready to go. Cleaned up last limb fell out of tree this week was hanging since the
Derecho. Run the Shindaiwa 500 today, I like that little saw a lot lightweight lots of power for size.

Sadly, no portable generator will help in that situation, as we'd never be able to get gas for it as there are already lines forming at some gas stations in the area.

Best way to avoid lines, (and the nut cases that are waiting in them) is to get up real early tomorrow morning and hit the convenience stores. Some, like Stewarts in this area, open up @ 5:00 AM.

Gas, basic groceries, and most important: beer. :msp_biggrin:

Most stores are going to be downright crazy during the day tomorrow. I don't want any part of that insanity.

Got gas today, gens ready, saws are lined up, helped a neighbor take down an old pine today before it falls on his house or truck, cleaned up a bunch of leaves, got new bags of feed for the animals, all is well and we are just waiting.

Well genie 3 is now online after getting raped by the local Stihl shop for a flywheel key. $3.00 for a damn key. That's criminal, I hope his place gets leveled. I will now happily drive the 15 miles to the next Stihl place rather than going to the close one again.

Fuel is in, food is in, drinking water is covered. Tomorrow I'll fill a couple trash pails with water (with a liner), stock the beer, and pack for the hotel that I'm working in Sun/Mon/Tues/Weds that's less than a mile from my place... While I really hope the oaks don't come down on my house, I won't be there to get dead if they do... The house can get rebuilt. The garage should be just far enough away if it comes over... That keeps the saws and my truck safe... Will take the Jeep to the parking deck (along with a full up saw).

They keep moving the bullseye for this thing... Clearly we're not going to know ground zero until it hits, but it's so damn big, that probably isn't going to matter much...

If I had a storm heading toward me and a $3.00 part allowed my saw to be running again, I would be very happy to pay it. How much do you feel the key should have cost? And $3 isn't a very thorough raping. Just saying. Could always file a key out of a piece of your neighbor's car rim.

if the timber falls hard around here i sure hope we don't run out of cigarettes and energy drinks....now that would be a very very bad situation and put me and friends in a very very bad mood... can we all say a prayer for all the saws that will inevitably work beyond belief and finally give up the ghost...order your piston kits ahead of time haha! the absolute only good thing about this storm is the surplus of abused/beaten saws that will show up in 2-3 weeks needing TLC. Never driven an lowered S-10 in 65 MPH winds...never mind loaded...this should get very interesting.

1200% over normal isn't a rape?
$3 to get the genie running isn't really the issue. Its the idea. I own a business too, I understand markup, and I'm ok with it. That however is gouging, and no, that isn't ok.
