That is the reason I tried to point you in the direction of a 60cc saw. You already have a small saw and eve though it is a cheapie, with proper maintenance (sharp chain, correct carb settings, etc.) you will have the lower field already covered.
You will be intimidated by a 60cc saw at first! But don't worry, most of your cuts will be lifting the saw onto the trunk and simply pulling the trigger. The main weight is resting on the trunk!
Further if the trunk is to big / crotched / gnarly to be split by hand, this is noodling.

http://www.google.at/url?q=http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u0PawSuuRa8&sa=U&ei=o0VTVKj_IOOP7AaPnoGYBg&ved=0CBQQtwIwAw&usg=AFQjCNGW9JGX-OdvvgBU8s29s0XC72O3Xg

And above you asked how a winch and tree cutting can be performed all at the same time. I just use a come along and tension the tree into the diretion I want it to fall. With proper wedging technique you seldom really need it.

You're right. I have to be strong and stick with my original plan. I'm just going to get a CS 590, maybe a mini Dolmar, and keep the Homelite to practice maintenance/repair. Homelite struggles in bigger wood but it really wasn't meant to do that kind of stuff anyway. It's also been super reliable so I can't complain about it too much.

Okay so I need a winch too. Damn burning wood is starting to sound like an expensive endeavor.

Nope, been married to the same woman for over 20 years. All saws are funded by the "Guido Salvage" account so money is never an issue.

20 years, good deal. So the Guido Salvage account means you pick up broken/repairable saws to fix?

welcome to the site ambull01. i guess by now you have figured out this crowd is great. keep them questions coming it's great reading.;)

What part of PA are you from? I've been to Ft. Indiantown Gap a few times. I love that area! Hills all around the base. Trees everywhere. Whenever I see trees now I automatically think about cutting it down and bucking it.

Better check out the fiskars x27 if you're splitting by hand. The "how I dropped a tree on my foot" story was a classic by the way. Still laughing imagining the scene.

lol well it actually kind of hurt. I didn't think steel toes could actually bend so when I looked down I started to freak out. There was a huge dent. Also had to shoulder the tree off before I limped to the back porch. Good thing it wasn't a really big, tall tree. I really deserve to be missing at least a finger or something considering all the dumb things I've done with a chainsaw

Actually, it works the other way.

If a kerf is closing, threatening to pinch a bar, you pull it straight back, something you take into account in your stance, and the longer it is, the more likely it'll get pinched.

When a kickback occurs (and it's only a matter of when) the longer the bar the more torque (turning effort) it applies to the saw. Which you have to counteract.

The longer the bar, the more likely you'll be unable to monitor all of it, getting into trouble digging ditches.

I'd suggest that you use as short a bar as possible for those reasons & more. Less chain to file, too.

(For $20 more for the PS-421, I'd pass on the CS-400, all day, every day.)
Kickback from a 20" bar or so is way faster than a 32". The bigger saws can push the saw out of the cut into your shin or leg with enough force to bruise. The old gear drives could leave you with broken bones.

Burning wood is just an excuse to run your equipment...soon you'll need a FEL( front end loader), a dump truck, a diesel pickup( backup for dump truck) a TW6 splitter, a SuperSplit, various saw specific tools, a "guido salvage saw accumulator starter kit"...some mauls, hatchets, hand saws, pole saws, ropes, cables, wedges files, grinders, guides...

yup I remember when I was a rookie....

When we met I had money tied up in trucks, tractors, equipment, etc. As I liquidated holdings, I kept the money and used some of it to buy saws.

there...fixed that up fer ya....

That actually would be nice. I could use a different saw everyday. I like to work the crap out of my equipment though and there's no way I'll be able to store all that firewood. I'd have stacks everywhere.

Yep, you're absolutely right. I've always loved chainsaws. A machine of death and destruction that can fit in your hands. Sort of like a legal M240 7.62mm gun! Now that I have a fireplace insert, I have a legit excuse as to why I need to upgrade from my Homelite and why I possibly need multiple saws lol.

I really do need a 1 ton diesel pickup. Then possibly a dump trailer. Not sure what a front end loader is but I think a winch of some sort attached to the trailer's front end would be nice. I could use it to pull logs onto the trailer so I don't need to buck everything before loading. Man, I need/want all that stuff you mentioned.

I see. I was actually thinking about things I could sell last night to get my chainsaw collection started. Don't really need my riding mower, I usually use the push mower. Should probably sell my road bike since I don't use it, no time for it and too many people have been ran over by cars. Selling those two should get me the CS 590 and a mini Dolmar. Or I just stick with the Homelite and a 60cc saw then use the rest of the cash for PPE, wedges, etc.

I think I'm turning into a chainsaw junkie. I'm about to have most of my stuff in pawn shops so I can feed the addiction.

yup it appears you've found a new "home"...you'll fit in real well with the crazies in this jungle..
FEL( tractor-Kubota, john deer, Cub cadet, with a bucket on the front for loading the dump/trailer) so you can sell some crack(oops) 'firewood' so you can finance the next equipment purchase...

lots of AR-15 and AK boys here too....you're gonna like this place....there are other sites that are more "vocal" with the members as well...
if you're gonna buy a 1 ton diesel make sure its a real truck and not a Ford or Chevy wannabe girlie leather seat squishy heated door handle one( with pink bumpers )....make it a RAM !!!!

Wasn't trying to make light of an actual injury. As you well know using a chainsaw without any idea what you're doing can go bad very quickly. You're on the right track now though.

Seriously though, Fiskars X27, do yourself a favor.

I'll have to look up bucket loading dump trailers. That sounds awesome. I don't know about selling firewood though. I would feel a little shady scrounging for free wood only sell it to support my habit lol. I have three people that have some trees/logs to be cut up though! I'm about to be wood rich soon. Hope my little Homelite will stand the abuse. On the other hand, perhaps I should purposely kill to so I can buy a new saw(s).

I'm not too fond of the M16/AR-15 actually. I know it has served the military well for a long time but I would love something with a bigger caliber.

I like Fords and Rams. Been reading a lot about diesels since I've never owned one and wanted to educate myself about them before I enter into that world. The Cummins engine sounds great, especially the older ones. The 12v p-pump engine would be ideal for my purposes (I think that's the correct name). Will be hard to find those though, they're kind of old. Think they stopped making them in mid '98 or so. The 24v Cummins sounds a bit more problematic. The newer stuff sounds too complicated. Too much emissions stuff. What I would really love is a truck with no carpet lining. WTH would I need carpet in a work/wood hauling truck for!? Just want heavy rubber on floor boards, maybe some kind of rubber/plastic on the seats, don't need cruise control, don't need cd player or satellite radio, etc. I just want to get a water hose and spray out the inside of the truck when dirty. Then have a drain plug on the floor board to get the water out. That would be ideal.

Just dawned on me what FEL means. Front End Loader! Bingo! Man I'm slow today.

No worries, it was a funny sight. I was actually laughing hysterically with the tree sitting on my foot. I don't even think it really hurt, just my brain thinking it should hurt when a tree sits on your toes.

Yep, I'm going to get one. I've only read good things about it.

the 24v HPCR Cummins is fine as long as you filter the FUEL well. the 12v will run on bat urine. the 6.0 powerjoke is actually a good bargain if you can find one alive cheap because the head wasn't corrected ( $3k) not a bad motor with a very bad reputation until you perform the "head job" for it. Realistically all three major Diesels are excellent machines for what they are designed for... you just have different areas of concern to be vigilant with. the Duramax/ Alison has a few years that the fuel filters need upgrading as well. LLY series I think. its a High pressure common rail just like the cummins 24v fuel delivery to injectors issue and mold in the diesel acts like sandpaper.

Once you stack all you can..just start selling some. I bet firewood goes for decent coin in your x-y.

Yeah the 12v sounds awesome. Supposed to be one of the easiest diesels to mod for power too. Something about removing/cutting the fuel plate reaps big rewards.

The 6.0 is actually the PS I was seriously considering. Heard you need to get an OASIS report on the particular truck. Makes good power too. I'm seeing a lot of cheap/very reasonably priced 6.0 PS trucks around me.

Heard most/all of the Chevy's have IFS. Probably not going to matter for what I will use it for though. I saw some You Tube videos where the front wheels start to go in, then the wheels start to zig zag, then crap just breaks. Of course they were all pulling some heavy stuff.

Oh yeah, I like the 7.3 as well. Sounds a little anemic but should be more than I need.

True. Prices vary a lot though, not really sure why as I've never had to buy firewood. Of course everyone advertises seasoned wood. I've been reading that the majority of firewood people sell is not actually seasoned. Moisture content should be 20% or less. Which reminds me, I need a digital moisture reader too.

Oh, just thought of something else. Guess my ADD tendencies is pretty obvious by now lol. People here only seem to want hardwood, especially oak. Lots of people think burning pine will automatically cause massive creosote buildup and subsequent chimney fire. Soooo, may be a little hard to scrounge hardwoods to sell.

i'm in york co. we can hear the "big guns" from the Gap when they have practice and thats about 30 miles. where are you on the eastern shore?

They have big guns on the Gap? Oh wait, that's probably the range firing. I've only done the M16 and M9 ranges there.

I was looking at houses in York before I eventually moved to the eastern shore. Seems like York, PA and surrounding cities/towns really took a big hit with the housing bubble burst. There were mini-mansions (well not really mansions, just big houses) selling for less than $300k. Price history showed majority of those houses were bought around '07, right before bottom fell out.

Queen Anne County. From what I see, very little traffic for the most part. Except for bridge traffic on the weekends, that can be pretty bad. Lots of farms. Love it so far. Just wish there were more trees to cut down/buck!

I would avoid the 6.0, but that's just me. Too many injector, head gasket, EGR problems... They can be made to be reliable, but it's pretty expensive to upgrade all the common problems on them... 7.3 PS is a good engine and makes decent power, but not like the new trucks. 12 valves are great engines and easy to work on, but I prefer the Common Rail... The older Cummins are just too damn loud for my taste. My '06 Cummins Ram has been very reliable, and has plenty of power for anything I need to do. Even the older 7.3 IDI diesels in 88-94 Fords were pretty strong runners with a turbo and the pump turned up.
