Aggravated with my Stihl

Well I finally got the muffler to stop falling off my Farmboss. Used the red locktite and new tork screws. So, that fixed I headed for the woods. I made two or three cuts blocking up an 18" red oak after felling it and the saw made a hell of a racket. I shut it off and saw what looked like a piece of aluminum fin fall out from the sprocket area. I looked it all over and found nothing obvious. I took the housing off the bar side, grabbed the saw and gave a good shake. Out came four or five more aluminum fin looking things and 1 loose allen head cap screw. Threw that hunk of junk saw back in it's case and finished my cutting with the good ole cheap homelite. As usual. I have more hours fixing the Stihl than I have cutting with it. I bought it used and it's for sale again. I am guessing the fins are from the flywheel, knocked off by the latest screw falling out. I am not even going to check it out. Just sell it like it is, go to Walmart, and buy a cheap throw away saw. My Homelite has been cutting for almost 20 years without falling apart. I am not impressed with my first "real" chainsaw.http://www.arboristsite.com/images/smilies/angryfire.gif

I just paid $100. for mine. Bought the proper plug and gapped it correctly. Made a big difference in power. Bought an air filter. Muffler fell off today, lost one bolt. Didn't have a gasket in place? Don't want to cut horizontal, engine floods, gas drips. Heavy and makes my hands numb from vibration. But it seems to be a good saw. I just need to work the bugs out. It was owned by the "best mechanic in America." :)
John

So you bought this saw as a fixer upper for 100.00....Hmmmmmm.....Vibrates you say and makes your hands numb...Hmmmmm.......I have run alot of old saws and that is normal......In your case you should just sell it and move on.. ;) ;)

How many old junkers from all brands do you want..I can fix you up... PM me..

It sounds like you bought a used saw with more problems in it than you knew. It happens, doesn't mean Stihl sucks. Also, I think you will find a difference between the quality of Homelites of twenty years ago and today and not for the better. Homelite made good stuff into the mid eighties or so. You have what all of us are always looking for- an excuse to buy another saw!

How about a truckload of Wildthings?

Bob, hope you don't have a truckload of Thingy's. :buttkick:

:ices_rofl: If I did I sure wouldn't admit it. No, you won't see any Wildthings around here. I was just kind of jabbing at the guy with the broke down sw. Sounds kinda like 'Sap...he got a bad Stihl so therefore all Stihls must be bad. If you buy a used junker Rolls Royce it's still a junker, Rolls Royce or not.

100.00 for a 041 Farmboss, thats kinda steep for a 30 yr old saw, got mine for free, purrs like a kitten.

Well they couldn't be any worse than a truck load of Stihls ???

Mc Bob.

Could be alot worse, could be a truck load of BumbleBee saws, wait I sorry, is there a truck load of them left in the world, hehe

Yeah yeah yeah...sure, we know. If you're going to Placerville this year watch out somebody doesn't paint all your antiquated yellow saws orange while you're not looking.

I wish I had an 041 farmboss that ran.(Hint,Hint)

Hint hint ya say, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I see whatcha saying. Well Mow I told Belgian if he ever decides to come from Germany to Virginia I would give him that 041 of mine as a token for his long trip. Seems he has his heart set on one too. Tell what I'll do though, if I come across another one I won't even take it home. I'll just toss it in a box and ship it to ya, hows that.

Well, I've been doing some online searching including reviews on the new cheap saws. Poulan and McChulloch seem to be what's available. Any thoughts on those? I've read good and bad reviews on the Poulan, and can't find any reviews on the Macs.

Maybe the new Stihls, like the new Harleys, are way better than my old cripple. But I won't spend that kind of money to find out. I have to ask myself if I can get more use out of one expensive saw than I would out of three or four cheap ones.

Yeah my old homelite is probably much better than the new ones. It's got a lot of metal parts on it.

So if anyone has an opinion on the cheap saws, I'd like to hear them. Oh yeah, I know, none of them are worth even taking into the woods. But other than that, has anyone had any luck with one of the new cheap saws? 98 percent of my cutting is 12 to 18 inch oak for firewood out behind the house. I'm not looking for a logger job.

Thanks.

Hey, it's up to you...get whatever you want. But isn't aggravation more expensive than a junk saw? Get one of the little Stihls or Husky or even a Dolmar, treat it right, it'll last you for years. Or go ahead and buy a cheap PITA POS, new or used, and spend all your time fighting it and complaining about it. Unless you're just looking for reasons to be pissed off and thrive on aggravation why mess with junk of any kind.

Yeah, I hear you. I don't want aggravation. That's why I'm getting rid of this Stihl. But I would hate to jump into even more aggravation. What's a PITA POS? OK, I might have to rethink my thinking. I did see a Husky for around $200. I'll check out the others you mentioned.

You could'nt handle a 041.

Hey John, look below I have an S10:bowdown:

Tom has told me about you, he says you always try but just like your saws you are never able to get the job done. Sorry John go play somewhere else.:buttkick: :censored:
