Hi everyone from Downunder!!

I'm new to this forum... I have been referred to this site via another forum.

I have adapted a chainsaw motor into a quarter scale radio controlled Drag Car

It started out as a Poulon 2500

It has a mathematically correct pipe

Does anybody know of the best type of chainsaw engine that is:
1. light weight
2. POWERFUL!!!!
3. priced accordingly
4. Has low RPM PUNCH
5. has High RPM torque

I know my current engine is going to blow up during a pass (at least, that's the plan):)

It only runs on 2T oil, plus 100 octane petrol

I was toying with the idea of methanol, castor oil and nitro....that's still a possibility..hehe

I have room on the chassis floor to take larger engines

I have tried to see WashingtonHotSaws website, but it seems to be down.

How can I contact these guys??

have a look

Any thoughts???

thanks in advance

Crikey! It's great to have a bloke like you at the Arborsite!

That's a great looking car! How far do you race it? Quarter mile?

I'll let the saw wizards argue your "best" saw engine question.

I'm a homeowner with cutting needs. I haul around a Husky 359 and an older 55 Rancher which serve my purposes fine on my 15 acres of woods. I drool when I see the 385xp at the dealer and I like the Husky 357xp alot too. I think they are a cut above what I need though. As my dear departed dad said to me many times, "Son, you can piss-away alot of money buying what you "want" instead of what you "need". Try to understand the difference."

What type of cutting do you do or is you interest strictly engines? Where exactly are you? Never been to any place but Perth to link up with the Aussie Navy for maneuvers in Indian Ocean (rough seas!). I'd sure like to see more of the place, opal fields, vineyards in Tasmania, etc.

I converted a Homelite Super Mini, about 30 CCs to fly on RC plane. A bit heavy and vibration was bad but gobs of power. That is a reed valve engine. There are engines that are better than a lot of the Poulans from a modification standpoint. I know a fellow that messes about with converted engines in RC boats. He has changed some over to glo plug and running hardware store methanol. Gets rid of the flywheel and ignition system. Need to change or rejet carb to run meth/alky.

Whoa, that is one cool looking little machine!!

Are you limited as to the displacement of the engine? If you need to keep the powerhead weight low, you might consider the Stihl 020. A saw builder could modify it. Ed Heard in Ontario has built a couple of the newere 200T motors. But I have an old 020S that is probably in good enough shape to warrant porting. You could have the saw for $50 plus shipping.

If you can go larger, the 45 cc 346 Husqvarna is a lightweight powerhouse that has a fairly broad powerband when modded. The Dolmar 5100S, @ 50 cc, has more torque and power than of any engine that size.

Alternatively, you'd prolly be better off with an older design motor that has more low end torque in stock form...and the 35 cc S25 Poulan was the best of the lightweight Poulan iterations. I have one of those as well....$50 again...I don't know how reed valve motors take to porting and modding....

How about a Husky 242 screams into the high revs!!

A good choice. A modded old 266 engine might fit the bill too, something along those lines, dunno squat, but I think there are many possibilities for a screaming motor and I'm sure at least a few of the chainsaw gurus here will have some great advice regarding moddable, affordable, rebuildable, etc. etc..
When I was in jr. high there was a kid in town who built a go-kart powered by two big old Macs, that thing would burn rubber like crazy and topped out over 75mph, a bit scary, but in a fun sortta way.

Your project has my 10/10 on the "Coolness Scale", great stuff mate!

Your best bet would probably be a good Woods Port motor and a lightened clutch.

The lightened clutch will let you leave the line at much higher RPM's and youll still have good top end due to the porting/pipe!

Then you can use your gearing to give you a good launch while minimizing wheelspin.

Good looking layout

If ya got the room id go for the 084 Stihl........

if not the 044 Stihl is a lot smaller with crazy punch.......

but then again either of those are probably ludacris for that design.....

but obviously you are an excellent fabricator so let er rip!!!!!!!!

Killer Toy

The Dolmar saws (7900) seem to offer a lot of power for the weight... but thats a pretty big investment and motor.

Found a website that has the ol' 2 stroke tuner's handbook by Gordon Jennings
Gonna have a crack at modding my engine."what could go wrong??"......famous last words...

Show us some more info on that dragster. I think thats the coolest damn thing I have seen in a long time. Maybe thats the gearhead in me. Combining chainsaw engines and racing sounds like my cup of tea...:chainsawguy:

Bench tests have had good results so far....
a road test is soon to come
I need to be sure EVERYTHING works OK
no such thing as spare parts when you make a one off:clap:

Hi Muddy, I hope you come back and let us know of your progress with your project... please!! Great story and fab photos!!

G'day, Tom,
I had some time to put into the weapon last weekend thought I'd chop up my front wheel rims.....lost 60 grams in total!
It's all woth it, I suppose!

Anyhow, I have yet to finish the chassis....I'm now thinking about wheelie bars and a wing frame:cheers: need more beer to figure out how it will all look

Hmmmmmm.......Beer!:givebeer: :p

Yeah, I loade a video from Christmas 2006 (before I made the rollcage, pipe, and modded the head) It's got that unmistakeable saw sound
I only had made at the time a steel header pipe:popcorn:
