You all need to recycle your carburetor based chainsaws and get the 500i

One of those MS460's came from the classified ads on a different forum. It was already ported.
I even took the cylinder off of it to remove the base gasket and the porting looked pretty good so I left it alone and just did a good muffler mod on it. I think he just wanted a quick sell for what he had in it.

I bought the saw already done. When I got it I wanted to put a double barrel muff mod on it, so I did that myself.
I took some 1\2 inch emt bent it and then cut a small piece out of the side of each pipe and then welded them together.
I then outlined the pipe on the side of the muffler and took a burr and opened it up, so the pipe fit just right. Then I welded the pipe to the muffler from the inside so the weld cannot be seen.

That's sweet man sounds like some shut id do but I only have a old Lincoln tombstone. Not saying it can't be done it would just be a bit more difficult. I used a small barkbox off a weedeater a did this last night. It was quick and easy and works for now with a completely stock saw. I like that it looks pretty well factory too. Needs a nicer bolt but otherwise effective.

I FINALLY got to run one this week, along with a 572XP and Ive got to say, that 500i is a BEAST! I REALLY wanted the 572 to outcut it but the sad reality is that it WONT. And in addition to that, the 500i is lighter! Neither one of them will outcut my ole 390XP but the 390 weighs over 3 lbs more. That may not mean much to most people but when you lug one around in the hills cutting timber every day it makes a HUGE difference.

Oh I can imagine. Thats kinda how really high end motorcycle helmets are to me. My last 2 are $1200 arai's the best brand money can buy and a big part of that is weight cause even just a few oz difference on you head is like lbs on your arms with a saw. Makes all the difference when using hours on end. I want to run one of the 500s but recon ill probably never be able to buy one any time soon. I'm more of a $250 red-light 066 kinda guy for now. Just picked it up today.

Describe one advantage of this injection system on a saw (hint: there may be one, but it's minor). Remember, it's injecting fuel into the case. It has no sensors for air flow or exhaust O2 and must use the same methods as Autotune/Motronic.

It's 3deg out, I'm bored and sitting here drinking coffee and throwing wood in the stove.......

Does Ethanol fuel attracting water causing corrosion affect an injector like it would a carb?

I can't imagine that the injection system would be happier with corrosion than a carb. It's got to use the same materials (cast pot metal, steel, plastics, etc), so how it handles corrosion would just be random chance depending on what part got damaged. On the other hand a carb cannot vaporize a water droplet, so if you get liquid water in the jet it cannot function where the injector will probably be able to push it through - it won't burn but it won't block it up.

Still, we're talking about fuel so saturated with water it's condensing out - that's pretty extreme. I run nothing but E10 and let it sit around for months, always have, and I've never had that happen.

That's my thoughts as well. The crude injection system on the 500I has little to no advantage over Mtronic.
The one advantage would be cold weather operation. No frozen carbs, but that only happens in a rare combination of temp and humidity anyways.
 
In the world of Bare Shelves Biden where no service is available ANYWHERE. No one shows up to work and people are being fired for a Vax status. I think I'll stick to my carb and non computer stuff. At least I can get the firewood I depend on to heat my home and can work on myself instead of a potential boat anchor.
 
Throttle response is amazing, power to weight ratio is off the charts. I use my saws to make a living and if I could justify buying a new saw right now it would be the 500i. As it is, Ive got enough saws to last me to retirement and beyond. 034, ms461, ms441C, 562xp, 372xpw, 576xp, 572xp, 2 390xps. In addition to that if I add in the saws my son who works with me has, hes got several small stihls, ms460, ms660, and the holy grail 500i.

What is the relative weight of the injection system components compared to a typical carb?

I've worked on a bunch of carbs - they are a self contained unit and don't weigh much.

I have no idea. All I know is the total saw package as I used it weighed less than the 572xp. The only saw that I consider a real fellers saw that weighed less was the 372xpw that I built and that was only lighter by 8 oz or so and it had a 20 tsumura lightweight bar while the 500i was wearing a 25in stihl bar.

OK - I have a bunch of 40cc saws and there a large difference in the weight of the saw, but they all have essentially the same carb. So it's hard to credit the injection system with the weight reduction.

But you can’t beat the throttle response or the power that the 500 is making. I’ve ran mine a lot falling oversized timber the last year or so without a hiccup I really don’t see many issues coming up with these saws for the professional community where they belong. The firewood and saw shelf queen types will have issue with any saw you just don’t run them enough to keep stuff cleaned out like it should be to stay running right.

If you really know how to tune a carb throttle response isn't an issue with a carb. The problem is few people do, including every day users.
 
Im gonna be real curious to see how this 500 runs over the long haul. My son that has the 500 bought a 460 10 years ago and he uses it every day to top off with, cut up with, cut firewood with, etc.... That's the toughest saw Ive ever seen! I FINALLY had to put a set of crank seals in it a few weeks ago and that's ALL Ive ever done to it! I pulled and replaced the muffler with a dual port version since I had it off to look at the piston already. That piston has ZERO noticeable wear on it!
