041G - A saw I thought I might never own.

Today was a good day to be a Stihl collector. I was fortunate enough to add a 041G to the collection. The 041G is one of the rarest Stihl's out there, so much so that I didn't know if I'd ever own one. This one has a few issues, but nothing too bad. First off, it's a runner. It starts and runs great. The previous owner got it running after digging it out of the barn, but did not cut with it. The support for the top of the full-wrap handle was broken and replaced with a nicely fabbed steel piece. Amazingly, I already found and bought the proper replacement. There's also a small ear broken off the bolt hole on the bottom front handle mount. I'm hoping that I can have this piece built up with weld. There are a couple places on the front of the left side case that might need a little welding as well. There's also a small crack where the upper handle bracket bolts on. Several of the bolts have been replaced, but fortunately are all the proper metric threads. The muffler guard is missing, and that'll likely prove to be very difficult to find. Nearly every 041G I looked at online is also missing this part. My plans are to go through this saw entirely, and possibly powder coat it. That way it can be a looker and not get chipped up or messed up with fuel if I were to run it at a GTG. A nice NOS old school Stihl bar would be cool to find too.

Nice find Brad, I know how you feel as I was that excited or more when I found my Poulan 252! Nice when you find something that rare.
Do you know how many years the 041G was made? Is it setup for 1/2" pitch chain?

Take an old gear drive saw and dog it in, the feel is absolutely amazing. They may not cut fast but there is no stopping them.

I know I had a blast that day we were running your 10 series gear drive and the 252. Pulling a 1/2 pitch chain makes up some of the speed when your pulling thumb size chips!

I would be nice to get to run Brads 041G sometime.

Wow......Yep that's a rare bird Brad. Send it to Mike for powder coating......you will not be disappointed.

I'm beginning to collect parts for the rebuild. I already received a new air filter and the proper top handle support. The Lab Metal already showed up for a couple cosmetic repairs, prior to powder coating.

Just tonight I ordered the following.
  • SKF 6202 C3 Crank Bearing
  • SKF 6002 C3 Crank Bearing
  • SKF 6003 C3 Output Shaft Bearing
  • Both Crank Seals
  • Crankcase Gasket
  • Gear Cover Gasket
  • Cylinder Gasket
  • Exhaust Gasket
  • Fuel Tank Gasket
  • All 5 Intake Gaskets
  • Fuel Line and Pickup
  • Throttle Lock @ Spring
  • Carb Kit

I'll be ordering all new cheese head hardware to complement the fresh powerder coating.

I didn't know they existed

Way cool

We cut with a 041 for years up here. That was the easiest starting saw ever. It would happily perk over, thumb the choke open blip the throttle to idle, and it would just sit there burbling to itself waiting for something to do.... darn good torque for 60cc

I can't wait to see the completed brad special!

Sounds like my MAC 35 when it gets bound up. Slow as all getout but it kicks like a mule if you're not careful... Now If I cn find someone smarter than me to help me fix it's starter,... It always fires on the 2nd or third pull.
