Husqvarna calls the stuffers "cups". They basically slide over the crank counterweights creating a full circle crank. The idea is to reduce crankcase volume. The theory of using a smaller displacement top end is an interesting one, one that I haven't heard. In the five series saws stuffers are used in the 550xp and 562xp, which share displacement with the 545 and 555, which have no stuffers. The common theory(at least the ONLY theory that I have read up until today) is that the stuffers are there to increase case compression on the down stroke of the piston in turn increasing transfer velocity.

People have tried all of the combinations of 46mm, 47mm, stuffed and not on this platform. Each setup changes the characteristics of the power delivery. There is no "best" combination, it's simply a matter of what kind of work you want to do with the saw.
