Assuming he’s still looking after 8 years, I’d want two saws. It’s nice to have a back up if one quits on you or gets badly pinched. For wood up to 36” I’d be thinking a 70-80cc saw with a 28” bar, whatever the best deal turns out to be. That’s just a great all around size of saw imo. It’s powerful enough for a larger bar and a 28” bar allows you to do a lot of limbing without bending over and it’s not so big or heavy that it’ll wear you out. Augment it with a smaller saw 30-50cc as a backup or for small jobs and you’re pretty well set.
