Hello all,
I recently inherited a nearly new 488 from my father-in-law. He thought perhaps it already needed a top end or something because he was suspicious of the air filter after only one or two days of use, and it was starting to run poorly. As a veteran motorcycle tech, I thought it sounded like a pretty good deal for me.
Anyhow, it doesn't need a top end, and is just running waaaay slobbery rich on top, and I'll take care of that.
My question is this: Will this thing really handle a 20" bar and will it be able to cut hardwoods at a reasonable rate with the 20"? Also, I just took my first look at this thing two days ago and haven't had a chance to pull the carb yet and fiddle with it. I have read on the "omniscient interweb" that the 488 is a bit low RPM of a machine, and that one could perhaps squeeze another 1000 RPM with modifications. I typically prefer stuff stock (my Ducati even has stock exhaust - and that's saying something), but I'm wondering if guys go nuts hot-rodding these things like folks do motorcycles? I'm just curious, I suppose.
TIA,
Drew
