I hope this post is intended as a bit of humorous social critique. Because the idea of having to ask the massa for permission to buy saws is insane.

There is no basis, ethically or under our system of laws, for .gov controlling the ownership of saws, axes, or whatever. And anyone who thinks that is a good idea, or that the underlying principle is a good one, needs to take a step back and do some serious thinking about the broader implications of what they are endorsing.

What I see is, too many saws end up in untrained hands. Should there be some sort of certification before ownership. I have seen to many homeowners lately cutting from 40 foot ladders. I never understood doit yourself on some things. I wonder if these guys doing this stuff pull their own teeth:laugh:

Even assuming this is true, how is anybody's business beyond that of the idiot who is making careless, uninformed choices?

I could see there being an expensive surcharge on a chainsaw for people who don't have a safety certification. That way it would be more worthwhile for a homeowner to just call in the pro's. And the certification should be free or very cheap but reliant on a person actually displaying some sort of sense and competence at least that way it wouldn't be much of a hindrance to someone who cuts their own firewood but is not a professional.

SURE !! that sounds like a good idea !!!
then we can have one for buying Q-tips,,havta show you know how to use them so you dont push in to far and damage your brain !!
need one for buying straws also,,dont want somebody putting one up thier nose ! :)

I am BIG proponent of natural selection! Chainsaw are by far the most dangerous power tool you can use. And they are very unforgiving! That said, It is up to the person buying one to know their limitations. If they are smart enough!

You can force people into going to a chainsaw safety class. But you can not make a idiot smart! It is a double edged sword. I am in the process of teaching / showing my neighbour how to safely fell and buck trees. He is a good kid and willing to learn.

The first time I bought some non-safety chain and non-narrow tipped bar. The dealer didn't bother to ask me what my experience level was. But to be truthful, I knew the part number for the bar. I knew the type of chain and links needed for the chain on the new bar.

Knowledge is power, know more then the bonehead behind the counter. And you can get what you want.

Dealing with dealers can be a mixed bag at best. Some are looking out for their bottom line and some are looking out for their customers. IF dealers had the time and money to do it. It would be great IF they asked some open ended and close ended questions about a customers experience level(It is called funneling in sales speak). Then give a educated sales pitch to said customer about how brand X saw would best fit their needs and experience level. Also advise customers where to get a safety course if needed and what kind of ppe THEY NEED to BUY. Smart customers will listen to a good dealers advise and stupid ones. Well lets say that natural selection will deal with them!

One of the problems with the human race is it's always the other guy who's the moron. We all have areas outside of our expertise and would look like idiots to an expert.

Why don't we have Kim Jong-il and find some old Khmer Rouge leaders to come over from North Korea and show us how to control the people, the Gov. always knows best! Look how good and safe there people are from over control.

Now I know why my grandpa says "We the People" are our own worst enemy.

If you want to do some thing it will only take a 3 month coarse that cost this, and then fill out this paper to get approval, wait 3 weeks, then turn the certificate into the Gov.office with proper ID, then pay to get your license to mow your yard!

I am for it!:clap::clap::clap:

Oh ya, who would profit from a certificate or paper to buy a saw?

I too would like to live in that utopia, that castle in the clouds with all the pretty butterflies and pretty flowers where everything is good and right :)

Well, you're a bit over the top, but I think you're right about a lot of things there. But... your logic seems to be something along the lines of... "well, the whole place is going to hell in a hand basket already, so let's let the joint fry." It's sorta fun to talk about it that way, but in real life I think we all expect better.

It's probably oversimplification, but it seems these days you can break folks down into two groups, those who watch the world do what it does and take their little piece of the pie, and those who have a true sense of moral outrage and GET IT DONE. I LOVE working with those people!

I think that's what I like about Rope's thread... he obviously felt his sense of moral outrage this morning.. way to stay on it, Rope! Don't let 'em get away with it! There's already way too many people lettin' crap slide.

I went for a run this morning in the National Forest (I had a day off, woohoo!) and ended up picking up about 10 crushed beer cans (ironically, "Natural Ice") from a few weekend morons who drive their 4-wheelers around and discard their beer cans. I mean WHAT KIND OF LOSER has so little respect for everything they just huck their garbage? It blows me away. If I ever see 'em do it, they're gonna be happy they're on a 4-wheeler.

We may not think that saws should be regulated, but there's no question that Rope touched on a sore spot.

Kim Jong-il, Khmer Rouge and various other communist/socialist leaders have "tried to control the people". Problem is that it has never worked! You can not build a utopia without some blood being spilled! At least that what most communist/socialist leaders believe!

You can put all kinds of controls on people. And the people will get fedup and revolt. Just ask Nicolae Ceausescu...

Rope, where you born knowing how to run a saw???????
Didn't think so.
So why do you think nobody else but a pro should be able to buy a saw.
How can you become a pro without starting with your first saw and learning from there?????
Hopefully new saw/tool/power-equipment owners will have enough smarts to gather info on safe operation or to find someone to teach them propper respect for any equipment they decide run.

Lol.. Did this get moved to the Political forum or something? And what the #### does a straw and qtip have to do with a chainsaw?

(Personally for all the taxes I pay up here in NY a cheap or free chainsaw course taught by pro's to enhance public safety seems like a better use of money than all the overpaid state troopers up here.)

Tommy the ones I see doing it can easily afford my rates especially if you count the hospital stay<a href="http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&lpver=3&ref=11" target="_blank"><img src="http://content.sweetim.com/sim/cpie/emoticons/000203F2.gif" border="0" title="Click to get more." ></a>

No doubt Rope, your right, I was messing with ya. There are a awful lot of saw owners that has no business at all using a chainsaw. I know exactly where your coming from with your observations. You should see what I see come in the shop, you would be amazed.

As much as I like selling I've flat refused to sell saws to some folks that I know would only get hurt or cut up with them. Some would feel I have no right to do that but its me that wants to and will sleep with a clear conscience regardless. Unlike the big box store where corporate dollars rule over everything us little dealers can say no and there is no one to call and complain to.

Your issue Rope is its a free country. The stupid are allowed to go out and buy something to hurt theirselves and many times someone else in the name of freedom and liberty. Wars were fought for that Rope so your just going to have to deal with it buddy, thats just the way it is baby, Elvis, 1967,haha

Wow man,,you may be one of those that get to live after Rope and i cleanse the world !! a well worded and thoughtfull post...
You missed the third group,,those that suck off what they can at the expense of others,,those that make the working man pay for thier survival with little or NO input on thier end..
those with "moral" considerations are few and far between nowadays..
how many of those sucking the life out of America slugs, illegalls and just plain lazy sob's taking advantage of the system we now have ( thank you barack HUSSAIN obama ) have contributed to the way of life WE strive for with OUR moral standards ??
yes,WE expect better, and SOME of us do what we can, inspire the children so it MAY get better...
Do what you can man, hope it gets better,it wont tho...the SLUGS shall inherit the earth..
another roman empire falls..
like my great uncle said " i'm glad i'm dying,i wont get to see what it turns into " ..

the goverment will be the failure of all great civilizations..

Hmmmmm strawman argument, so should ole rope be able to buy a atomic bomb?

No, but IMO I'm smarter than ole rope. So from now on you are confined to only running Stihl saws, because any dummy knows any Stihl is better than any other saw ever made by any other manufacturer. If you ever take your chaps off cause it's too hot, well then the only Stihl you will get is the 200T with a POS carb, second offense means you hand over the keys to your business. Because I say so and I think I'm smarter than you.

Hmmmmmmmm, got socialism?

Precedents such as what you have described are slippery slopes.
