Please excuse my ignorance. Is a rotary style chainsaw engine the same basic concept as a mazda rx-7 rotary?

At least on the dolmar rotary, it is the same.
I have no idea on the yanmar.

Yes, except for the lubrication - the saws run on mix (20:1 in the old days).
Actually only Dolmar and Yanmar did produce rotary engine chainsaws in numbers. The funny part is, that the first Yanmar rotary chainsaw (they actually had several models in 2 sizes over a 4-year span) came out 1 year earlier than the Sachs-Dolmar KMS4... Dolmar claims they were first.
