At a recent charity wood cutting event I saw a variation on the Quick Stix idea.

One of the guys had a length of heavy gauge, metal wire with the last 3 inches or so bent at a right angle. He fastened the short end to the left side of his saw's front handle with a stainless radiator clamp so that he could swing it out perpendicular to the saw to measure as he cut, or swing it back towards the rear of the saw where it was out of the way. Distance from the tip of the wire to the chain was 16 inches.

Low tech. Effective. Easy to make or replace or remove. If you make it out of soft wire you are less likely to impale yourself on it.

I will try to sketch it (that's supposed to be a chain saw, looking down from above).
