This is an internet forum,not an english class! I cant spell and can barely type. Dont know the correct way to write a letter, or make paragraphs correctly. But who cares, this is a common intrest site. Ive had and seen this jerk dswenson busting balls over spelling and periods,dumb #### like that, its just uncalled for. If you dont like what your reading stop reading it and find another fourm. If your a tradesman you dont write words all day, you work with your hands and use skill to operate machines that can kill you in 2 seconds. Your always thinking about your next move to stay alive and be productive. So at the end of the day your not sitting around trying to figure out how to spell a word corectly or worry about if you used a period where an comma should go. Not every one goes to school to learn a trade!

They def have some good loggers up there on the West End. Lotta loggin knowledge with that family for sure! I got some good pics of their jobs last summer... one is lookin right up the skyline with the bowman halfway up to the landing.

That square corner is real nice to make under cut's too, as you know and bite in. VS round won't grab the same, even my round filed chisel chain is different then the one square filed. You are right on key about all your chain talk. I also agree 100 having a sharp chain is huge! I round file my chisel chain by hand, and manicure the rakers. Cut's effortlessely. My timber falling friend Brian is going to show me again hand filing square. He uses the grinder you speak of, and like you say the ticket if you cut for a living. My cutting conditions are usually clean, and I avoid alot so I can keep them sharp for a long time most of the time. And I can hand file pretty fast, and after 25 years got the chains where I want. I would love too have a chisel grinder! Funny now when I get a cahin where I want when the rakers are .25 or .30, it almost makes me sad if I need to throw on another chain even knew, because the other is so close to perfect!

That "how short is too short thread " got me to thinking , and all the vids I see where cookie cutters are rocking the saw on the dogs. I never had a sharp saw that I wanted to touch the dogs if I wanted a fast cut .
So that got me to thinking about wether their chains were sharp . . Rr
And I figured I could learn something . . All I needed was a way to get someeone in hardwood ountry to divulge their knowledge of what it takes to cut hard wood . I just couldn't accept that after 40 years a better way hadn't been found to sharpen a chain than what I did as a kid in Maine .

I do get a kick outta the cookie cutter vids, in particular the over rev and slamming of the bar on the wood.
The shock to the powerheads with that repeated abuse probably leads to clutch and crank pto failures.

As far as the chain goes, I was taught that you matched cutter angles, raker height with the power characteristics, bar length and wood types. The standard "grind" is a compromise between cut speed and durability.

Ya and you could make up a loop from a roll of 52 or 75 Oregon chain and cut for 4 hours with it and it would cut pretty good . Then lawyers got involved in the saw chain industry and now you need to work them over good..

funny you should mention guys doggin a saw in to make it cut. when folks pick up one of my saws at a gtg they cant hardly get them to cut. i have to explain to them that the chain is sharp and you dont need it dooged in. early in the day on a fresh chain you really have to watch doggin it in or it will stall the chain. but pull the dogs back a tad and watch it eat . when the chain stops pullin the saw in and you need the dogs ,its time for a touch up.

Well, that's one side of the coin. The other is the fact that there are folks that actually paid attention in elementary school, let alone HS, and can string a decent sentence together. It is only fair that occasionally, for the sake of sanity and English itself, someone brings it to the Internet's attention that English is being butchered; you'll notice the OP cleaned up his posts later. God knows how often I have to hold my breath. I mean, a paragraph is not even teenager level word craft folks. This isn't rocket science. He goes on a rant about folks on YouTube aiming low, and now you want folks to aim even lower with their 'education'. Sure, why not...

Unfortunately for the English, we have to [ab]use their language to communicate, whether in person or on the internet. I truly believe that asking someone to exercise a 6th grade level of competency is nothing to disparage. It isn't demanding perfection, it's asking for decent communication.

It's kind of depressing....I've got 100 feet in the shop that isn't worth 2 ####s until rakers, gullets and cutters are all re-worked.....
