I have an OWB and run a greenhouse that will eat alot of wood in the first month (4 to 8 cords) and 3 wood guys let me down by not delivering any wood!!
first guy that was bringing 20 cords that I ordered last summer is having equipment problems and his processor broke down.
next guy has 2 trucks that are in the shop .
3rd guy is coming in the next week hope .........
my love hate thing for my boiler is based on my wood pile and right now I am burning green stumps and deep fryer fat to keep my feet warm.
still better than a gas bill but I am a little pissed at these guys that say they are in the business and can't deliver.
all summer is was too wet or they said that wood is a fall thing and call then ..... well then has passed and I am getting into growing season and I am not sleeping well.
this summer I will be calling every day untill I see at least 20 cords as trying to get anything that I can burn in a boiler this time of year is almost imposssible!!:censored:

That sucks. I feel bad as I have about 20 cord ready to go. You could go out pallet hunting and see what you could find to tide you over. In the US anyway pallets are thrown into landfills:(

Pallets are free here too but my boiler has a 20 x 24 door so to burn a pallet I need to cut it down and its more work that they are worth in burn time .
not to mention I have to get them home and they are big and take up alot of room on the truck.
this last guy I called sounds like he is the real deal.
logger during the week and weekend wood guy so I hope it all works out.

They are a pain some times. I was cutting one this weekend and hit a nail broke the chain and took out two chisels. $18 chain down the drain. :( I make two cuts right by the notches they will fit through my 22'x22 door.

Good luck, hope this guy come through for you. :)

and i thought i had it bad

how long have you been using your owb? I installed a 60000 btu wood insert last year, one of these new super efficient deals. heats our 5200 sq house beautiful. I sometimes heat the bed rooms upstairs with oil when it is really cold out. i have kept it going 24-7 for the past few months.we collected up ourselves through the past spring about four cord of wood. i really didnt mind to much. got a nice new husquvarna 359 and a 25 ton splitter and had at er. the only problem is im thinking by next winter i should make sure i have at least six cord seasoned. i couldn't imagine having to get 20 cord. Have you tried contacting any local tree company's to see if any are willing to drop off uncut logs. you would have to be willing to cut and split it but i think you would save some big money. Im sure that is one of the reasons you went with a owb in the first place. i have found a guy will to drop off uncut lengths for 50 bucks a cord as long as i take more than four cord. seems like a fair deal to me much better than the 175 to 225 everyone around here is asking for split and delivered wood.

I would check the local logger ( like it seems you already did) and just buy a tri-axle load or two and cut it up yourself. It will most likely save you some $$ and you would get the size you want also..

I feel your pain. I've been trying to get a truckload of tree length for the past 2 months. I cant even get anyone to call me back. Good luck!

Sounds like its time to get the saws ready and go asking people if you can "CLEAN UP" their woods. They'll usually let u cut of the dead downed trees just to get their property cleaner.
If you really need the wood, you'll be out cutting asap.
I just can't imagine needing 20 cords of wood simple for heating. That seems like an amazing pile of wood.

Was talking to neighbor couple weeks ago, burns 15 cord doing maple syrup. Said when going good it takes an arm full of wood every 8 to 10 minutes. Hope you have better luck getting your wood supply lined up. Sorry to go of topic.

If you have any trappers or furbuyers in your area see if you can get some coon carcuses from them. Burn like oil. There used to be a furbuyer near me who heated his house all year with them. He said the only problem was making sure the fire wasn't to hot.

Only problem I have with getting my own wood is that I have a very bad lower back from when I was in a accident.
I can load and do light work with the saw but my big cutting days are over
I do have a local wood guy that charges $30 an hour for 2 guys just to run saws and they can do alot of cutting in that hour so a semi load may be the way to go next year ....

Now that would be a pretty sight. Filling the box with coon carcuses....yuck.

Possibly offer a service to your local 'Tony Montana'. Nark or 'take care of the problem' disposal. Whole or in ez to burn 6 pieces. You can charge a premium to billet the problem. The fatter the better. You should get a solid 12 burn time per person and supplimental income, tax free.

On a serious note, if you have a local papermill nearby, hook up with one of the triaxle drivers. I spoke to one yesterday and they get $35/ton for paper wood. Going rate for a homeowner load jumped to $700, $500 last season....

Sorry to hear that your guys have let you down. Pallets might be a bit of work, but it's a better choice than running out of wood. Another idea would be if there are any sawmills nearby you might get a super deal on slab wood.

northstar heat n glo. doesnt heat the whole house but does have two extra zones going to an inlaw apt in my basement. i have a very open floor plan on the level the insert is on and when its zero outside i can keep it as high as 85 through out the first floor but will need oil to heat the bedrooms. tomorrow i have the fireplace guy coming to give me an estimate on installing a gas unit in the master bedroom. this is a room with a 25 ft ceiling so i hate heating it with oil. before i installed the insert i was burning 2000 gallons of oil per year. So far this year i have burned 120 gallons so im doing pretty good ...let you know how i make out

I was wondering the same thing myself, a 5200 sq ft house with an insert? Achoo BS

like i said doesnt heat the whole house but went from burning 2000 gallons of oil to 120 so far this year. how big of a space are you heating and what are you using.

sure i should close to pay for the insert in one year. Especially if i keep gathering my own wood. now next year i want to face the wall the insert is on with field stone from floor to ceiling sould look nice. the peak of the ceiling is about 40 ft. ill try to use the same stone that is around the front door
