Top reasons not buy a 290 farmboss

I bought into farm boss hype years ago and ran a o29 super thinking it was a great saw. I was the 'typical' farmboss owner cutting a few cords of firewood a year and never had any trouble with the saw.

I wish someone had set me straight sooner. The few extra $$'s for a 026 would have been well worth it over the years.
Some people don't have that extra money or don't use a saw enough to care. Some of the 290 users are young strong guys that don't care about weight. You said your 290 never had any trouble. I've had one for 10 years without any trouble, but I also have a couple 261's. Not everyone needs a Cadillac to cross the finish line. Some are quite content crossing the finish line in a Ford Escort  It's like trucks, I could get by with a 3/4 ton gas regular cab, but for just a few thousand $$$ more I drive a 1 ton Duramax crew cab LTZ.

Imo, the majority of people that have bought this saw on recomendation from their "buddy" that has one or the dealer that told them "for your needs" this is the saw. Are probably very happy with their purchase.

As the op stated it wasn't until he did some research about better options the he was disatisfied. The saw preformed without issue.

So looking at it from the perspective of someone that buys a saw that will probably never do their own repairs. Is the 290 a good saw, yup. But then again, if someone is reading this to research what saw to buy they will most likely find there are better options.

Guess if you have to explain it's not funny.
<---- that was 'my' fat period.

Nice job on the weight loss!!!! OK crap, just started getting into handguns and bought a glock 17, prolly the ms290 of the pistol world???

What is the 346 xp ported of the semi-automatic pistol world???

Wonder how one would compare to the new Husqvarna 455 Auto tune. Actually like the changes, from the new top cover design to the Auto tune concept....it's a home owner grade $400 dollar saw.

A LOT of MS290's are sold. Any one ever do a comparison side by side with other $400 options? The Stihl ratings for their HP are better than competitive products in the similar price points, I.e. 291 has a better rated HP than Husqvarna 455. I feel a video concept beginning to happen...

The 290 to 455 AT is a comparison I'd prefer not to make. If I were selling 455's at the dealership, that would be alot different....

As for the 290/291 thing, I did a thread on here about the durability of the 291. It is a great saw, but right now it is stupid expensive. With the easy start, it is crackhead expensive. Once all of the 290's are out of the distribution channels, they'll very likely lower the "sale" price of the 291. The MSRP of all of the saws is high, and we sell most models at "sale" prices recommended by our distributor. The newer models have no recommended "sale" prices until they have been out for a while. Most manufacturers of anything do this. Try buying the newest electronics at a discount now, and check back on the same model 6 months from now....

Since they have already designed the M-Tronic for the 261, the 291 retrofit will be laughably easy. I suspect that once that model is out, and the newness wears off, we'll have a fair comparison for the 455/460 AT, with the 271 vs 455, and 291 vs 460.

Sweet mother of pearl! I'm both a reasonably chainsaw-educated homeowner/user and a fan of the MS290 for the intended market, but please never use "Glock" and "MS290" in the same sentence again unless you're referencing having shot your MS290 with your Glock! Folks bicker about sidearms more than chainsaws, but you'd never make a mistake when purchasing a Glock. I've been around and using firearms since I was 8 years old and after purchasing my Glock 19 back in 1996 I've never regretted it or thought about replacing it a single day. You made a fine choice and I commend you for it!

Askin' what is the 346 of the semi auto world will get you more opinions than Planters has nutz!

Unlike saws there are Soooo many more options eh?

I'd rather have one kimber than 3 glocks. They are nice pieces though

Not that I would ever spend the money for one, but just out of curiosity what is the difference between the 290 and 291? Is the 291 strato? M-tronic?

Those two saws would only share the same bar and chain. The MS 291 is a complete redesign. Like comparing a 88 Sierra to an 08 Denali.

Thanks, I guess those go for about a grand???

Looks like the gun hobby could get a lot more expensive than the chainsaw one...
Try having both those addictions AND kids. The credit agency workers probably make youtube videos of my credit reports behind my back.

Oh yeah, got 4 kids AND a wife... Just thought I better get my own gun and join the NRA and get my concealed carry permit before it becomes more difficult. New target range opened up around the corner so makes it real easy to do.

Chose the glock because seems a lot of police use them, I have shot all kinds of guns, wanted dependability more than anything.

By the way, I had an ms 290 and cut a lot of wood with it before I tried other saws, it worked fine and was very dependable. Heavy and a little short on power, but smooth and reliable.
Now the ported 346xp and 390xp have replaced it. Sharp chain still trumps all !!!!

OK, but did they actually incorporate any recent technology in it?

I have all the firearms My family AND I could possibly use.

Good thing I got my hoard before I acquired CAD eh?

Yes Sir, I remember buying 5.45, 7.62 for $70 bucks a thousand,,,,,,,,,,,,DELIVERED!

I just figured that was a kid of yours having fun.
Yer right murph, that is my youngest with some fake teeth she got out of a coin machine!!! Too funny.

That 346 I got from you is still kicking azz, turned out to be my favorite so far, thanks once again!!!

You don't work on hand guns, do ya-- figure u turn my glock into a minature oozie
