I didn't read all the posts so I appologize if this has been touched on already.
You're getting into some gray areas and some black and white areas.
Im mostly going by the hotshot drivers I know.

you're doing this for profit. that drags the DOT into play.
are you going interstate or intrastate?
Can the truck handle it? SURE. dont overload any axle and you may be legal to 25999 GVW. Except for the you're commercial part.
Some states, being commercial, you can have your truck replated for higher GVWR (within the limits of your axles). you can also do mods such as remove your bed to get better payload capacities.

now being commercial by the letter of the law. you're probably gonna be looking at a minimum $million bond and insurance policy. Your commercial tag is gonna triple the cost of your private tag. you need a CDL, log book, etc.
 
If you are pulling a fifth wheel camper you are exempt from the 26k and over CDL requirement.

Not exactly in California. We have non-commercial class licenses for RV's that exceed certain weights and lengths. You could get cited for driving out of class
