I'm getting ready to install a new p&c on a Husky L77. I've got the new base gasket, they don't apply sealer at the factory, right? So it's an option?

Exactly and can be had from any decent auto parts. If they dont carry the motoseal they can have it the next day useally.
Permatex Motoseal its available from any carquest dealer, they may have to order it though. It can be immersed in gasoline forever with no effect, its specifically made for joining cases in 2 stroke engines.
