If you do this, don't do it like this

Don't remove your climbing system from the rope until you have hit your next crotch. When you retrieve the end of your rope than untie and retie. Similar to using a split tail Ddrt system stay tied in while throwing the end up. If you climb by yourself at least carry a cell phone. A 25 ft fall...

Anyone able to take on an interntern?

CT. Give The New York Botanical Garden a call. I've had a summer intern for the last two years, both good kids who want to learn. We have a full time tree crew, and all the climbers/arborists are willing to share there knowledge. Or New York Botanical Garden...

    Learn to talk

Birds On more than one occassion I have had a red tail hawk swoop down and attack my throw bag as if it was a small animal. Once while I was retrieving it and pulling it across the ground. Owl probably thought it was food.

Almost got crushed by my flipline

From the photos I see you climb on a splittail w/a vt hitch. Those micro grabs won't release under tension a vt will. Can get you out of a a tight spot. Instead of the second lanyard use the other end of your climbing rope to make a second climbing system, alternate between that and 1 lanyard...

Almost got crushed by my flipline

Working with smaller loads is safer, but big pieces go faster. On a large horizontal limb like the one you cut the weight and torque of the limb caused the limb to split before your top cut was finished too much weight from the limb supported only by the bottom half, from the pith down. In my...

Almost got crushed by my flipline

Glad your ok. My opinion switchout the rope grabs for a vt lanyard adjuster. It can be released under tension If you choke the limb and it splits, your snap will ride up and release the vt also move the lanyard adjuster to your bride, and off your hip this will take your body out of the loop

    Would you climb this?

Drop it on the neighbors property, hopefully one of the stubs will punch a hole in the beloved driveway. I hate people who won.t help out in a pinch. What if you offer to plywood the drive way so the tires of the truck never touch it? Explain that its the only safe way,and there is a risk of...

    Advice for new climber please

Purchase and become proficent with a throwline. Its the first tool out of the truck on most jobs. No need to spike a tree to set a pull line. Even when doing a removal its some times easier to have a climbing line set from the ground, then to spike to the top of an 80 foot tree to set your...

    Dangerous Trees

I used to think climbing really hazardous trees showed how big my bulls were. Now I think its irresponsible. Your life is worth more to your family and friends, then damage to a fence or another tree. The first tree could be felled and what ever damage it caused repaired by the homeowner, The...

    fixing damage?

Smart move Matt, if there is a leak or a complication in years to come their guy will be responsibe, not you or your roofer who made the repair. Last time I damaged the roof the home owner fixed himself and I ground 3 or 4 stumps for free...
