The 461 does interest me some. I wish it was coming sooner than what's been predicted.

i have had a ms460 for about 4 or 5 years and if they bring out a so called new model with that same air filtration it proves there nuts and if it has more weight it should have more power the differance should like the 440 and the 441 mtronic

The filtration isn't as big of a deal for me. I don't cut aussie wood so what they have works alright over here. The fuel mileage if it's better would be nice. It seems you only get 10 cuts a tank in bigger wood with a 460.

Lads Australia is not the only place in the world where timber is dusty !try a bit of stone dead Elm or any dead timber for that matter so lets not get to excited ! the 461 has the HD 2 fitted and is good in the fine stuff. It weighs the same as a full wrap 460 ( mine is an Artic version so a little more weight ) The 461 stock is a fine saw Im spoiled as I have several ported saws so it tends not to be run as much as it should be. If it was me and I was in no hurry I would wait for the 461 or you want a replacement now then 441 for fuel AV reasons. Although the 461 I have is rubber it is smoother than the 460.

stihlman441,

That is a great video, how much extra money do you have in the moded 441m? also what size bar do you feel you can run on the 441m? how does the 441 hang with a ported 460???
All really great work/firewood saws. btw if your ever in my neck of the woods id like to put my hands on that 441m:biggrinbounce2:

I think ya better off with the wrap model even if ya change the handle back to a standard one,for the extra $40 or $50 you get
Twin bumper spikes
Roller chain catcher
High out put oiler
Large clutch cover
Stiffer AV springs
Can and do run a 28'' bar on it even in Ozzy hard woods no problem.
A ported 460 may be a bit quicker but the MTronic has a lot better user friendly fetchers
Much better AV
Much better filter system
Much better on fuel
Easy start system
No tune
Brilliant
You can run it all ya wont if you are ever down this way.

" I can tell you that I only fuel my 441 once during a day of cutting, and when bucking fireplace size rounds the smoother AV will help with fatigue at the end of the day".

Really? I cut for about 4 hours today and I used 4 tanks of fuel. How long are your days when you cut?

I struggled with that statement too. I know my 460 is a thirsty puppy but if I'm cutting trees in the wild for firewood about two tanks of gas through the saw runs my old butt out of gas but I can cut a lot of wood with two tanks. It takes me about 2.5 hours to burn two tanks of gas in the 460 and I will shut the saw down when loading wood on the tractor or turning a log or just taking a short break. All day on a tank of gas with a saw in this class is a bit of a stretch.

The first 460 I had with a bb kit would go threw a tank in somewhere between 20-25 minutes bucking firewood with a 24" bar. I don't know exactly how much wood that we bucked then as that's all we were doing. The other guys were splitting and stacking at their houses so It never was really stacked up and measured. I do remember going through 2 gallons several days.

My 441 M-Tronic is waayy easier on fuel than my 460. However, to say that you can run the 441 all day on a single tank of fuel just isn't accurate, in my experience anyway. I haven't tested fuel economy side-by-side with the 2 saws but as an educated guess, I would say the 460 uses two tanks to the 441's one tank.

as much as i tried to like the 441 i just couldnt,,,, to wide and just dont feel right i guess i could warm up to it but not until i just plain run the 460 to death.....and at this rate that will take a lifetime:givebeer: im sure there a great saw just not for everyone though

I have a Simonized ported 460 by far the meanest saw I've run. The thing just flat pulls like a freight train, it's no load rpm setting is 15,300. I did a before and after video on here with the same log and chain before and after, 40% faster than stock. I'll never sell the saw
gday indiansprings can you post a link of the vid please thinking of porting my 460

Here is the link: http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/175805.htm

The saw got considerably stronger after it had 15-20 tanks run thru it. It will eat a stock 660 alive. Very strong saw, but carry a big fuel can with you. For bucking production work it's increased performance has paid for itself.

With that said I got my 441 M-tronic under the Christmas tree today, no chance to use it today, bought it for the wood crew, it'll replace the old 038, want the benefits of the anti-vibe, filtration, less fuel use.
Both modded and stock saws have their place.

Sounds lIke you have it covered,i would run a 25'' or 28'' on the ported 460 and then a 20'' on the stock 441C.The FIRST thing to do is a muff modd on the 441C and get some fuel through it and get her broke in.

Is there a "How To" thread for installing a proted muffler? I'm considering it on my 460 come spring.

Are going to mod your own muffler or buy one? I just open mine up with a Dremel. some guys drill holes, some weld in small pipes, and some guys buy dual port front covers.

the Stihl dealer in Catatonk sells the dual port covers for around 35 bucks.

Not to take away from the thread but have you looked at any of the mufflers for sale on eBay? I have no idea what the differences between the models are but the prices are all over the map.

Tough crowd.

Not really. After a while you'll see that there are some people who like to interupt the thread by adding comments who's purpose is only to create a distraction. Guys like this have to be stopped quickly before their comment becomes the focal ppoint of the thread. I won't say any more or I'll fall into his trap.

Guess of these two saws the 441 would be better for me? I run nothing longer than a 20" bar. 99% of what I cut are firewood logs. I was thinking a 460 would be better since it has more power for the same weight. But maybe I don't need anymore power than the 441 especially with the more cuts per tank I would get. Most of that which I cut looks like this.
