Curious who treats the gas they use in their saws, and other equipment? What do you use? How does it work?

We regularly go without power in winter and need to gas up the generators, ATVs and other equipment throughout the year, but sometimes the gas sits a bit so I like to treat it.

Here's what I've been doing the last 10 years with success:

- Fill up our gas cans (some are poly, some are steel) ~8-10 cans of gas and 2-3 dye diesel for tractor
- Gas utilized: 91 Octane (for longevity in storage) / Diesel is seasonal Dye Diesel
- Gas cans are treated with 1/3 - 1/2 can of SeaFoam (more than suggested)
- Gas stored in shade/cool spot
- Diesel treated with Diesel Kleen/Cetane Boost or winter formula

I've never had any "bad" gas, and last year while going through chemo/radiation I wasn't able to use anything for months/almost a year, so it was the longest anything ever sat... I've now used it up in my saws, atvs, and jeeps without any issue.

I use 1G cans for my saws with the stored gas mixed with XP Pro oil mix and they run great. (346xpg, 372xp).

I use SeaFoam beacuse I've had great luck with it smoothing out idles in my cars and jeeps over the years, and making some old generators run much smoother in general.

I'm curious what everyone else does?

All my 2-stroke engines get 91 octane Murphy gas with Stihl 2-stroke mix 50:1. That mix has stabilizers in the oil to protect the fuel. My 4-stroke small engines get stabil in the tank with 91 octane Murphy gas. Stabilizing the fuel is a great thing, but I have found a much more effective solution to ensuring an engine will always start. I never leave fuel in the carburetor of an engine that will sit for more that a month or so. Especially on my generators I always shut off the fuel valve and let the engine run until it uses up all gas in the carb and dies. My Homelite LR5500 generator (11HP Briggs & Stratton) sat for over 2 years once without being started. I turned the fuel valve on, waited a few seconds to let the carb float bowl fill, and on the second pull it fired up and ran like brand new! Stabil is good, but an empty carb is even better!!!

Chainsaws 1 gallon cans Super 93 synthetic all in one oil mix and 2 caps full of Sea Foam
never had trouble
Exactly the regimen I run, but with 91 octane. I always add a couple caps of Sea Foam and a cap or two of Startron as well. Zero issues, zero problems with any of my equipment.

I buy 15-25 gallons of 91 E-free every 6-8 months & treat it with Sta-bil. Use it in saws, boats, atv, mowers, trimmers, generators, etc. Never any problems. Have some here that's over two years old and still good.

My question to you is... How do you know it's still good?

Because it started easy?
It has caused no engine damage?

My bet is the fuel has lost most of its light ends.

Bonus points if you recognize the song with the words...

Butane in my vains.

My point is that automotive gas is made up of a number of hydrocarbon compounds. If you keep it cold it will last longer. How long depends on the amount and storage conditions. Two years in a plastic can... I have my doubts.

I also use sea-foam in any gas powered engine I own... Absolutely great product... Have poured some in the carbs of mowers while running and they will blow out some white smoke and then idle like a new engine!!!!

Stabil's website specifically claims that it does not contain any alcohols. I'm not trying to start a fuel-treatment war--just dispelling a common myth. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there are better stabilizers.

Correct stabil is the only treatment other than Startron that doesn't use alcohol, but it doesn't contain the organic enzyme. Do these treatments actually do anything? I have no idea, but they don't hurt and more importantly it makes me feel better.
