True cost of heating with wood (joke)

I remember the original, a buddy of mine had a yellowed copy he kept under the glass top of his desk in his office for many years. I'm sure there was a CB radio listed !!!!! How can you not see the humor in this? Its so true, sometimes the more money you try to save, the more you spend. Lets...

    Gonna get me a Tractor!!

I'll tell you what tractor I have and maybe you can use it as a guideline. I have an early 70's model JD 4020 diesel with a hydraulic loader. 40 year old tractor- worth about $10K plus maybe $2K for the loader. These things really hold their value due to the price of new models. When cutting...

    Hearing Loss.......WHAT!

I have the same described hearing problem- former farmer and too many years running tractors with no cabs. Mine is worse in the right ear, I suspect from turning my head to the right and looking back to see and listen to the hay baler, chopper mower, or any other attachment that is also loud...

Hoop shed with clear cover how much faster would firewood dry vs outside

I am using one end of a 20 x 80 hoop building for my wood stack and I love it. It has a 16 ft long concrete pad at one end that I split and stack on, the building was originally put up to raise hogs. The building runs north- south, I keep the wood in the south end where it gets some sun, and we...

    Early Christmas Present

Hope you enjoy it. I also got one for Christmas- caught it on sale at TSC the weekend after Thanksgiving. I have a 22 ton for my main splitting, so I use this in the garage to make kindling and smaller splits. So far, it works great. It was never handy to get the big one out in the winter...

Should I report this "incident" to the farmer or let it ride?

Just a little info about the crop insurance- vandalism is covered under Hail Insurance, but the insured has to file a police report to prove that it was an unknown person- and then there has to be at least $ 50 minimum damage before the farmer could collect any payment. This covers sending...

    Powderpost bugs?

I gottem really bad in my ash that was cut and split last winter. I have heard that spraying with Borax solution will help prevent them, but won't help the damage thats been done. I am going to spray my pile this weekend. I doubt its a huge issue of wood loss, but dang it I sure hate to see my...

    EAB Question

Just wondering, if a county is put under EAB quarantine, can wood be moved from that county into an adjoining quarantined county ? Or are all movements in and out prohibited?

    Huskee Splitter hydro leak

I've got a Huskee 22 Ton splitter that has a slow drip leak of hydro fluid. It seems to be leaking around the top of the hydro pump, where it bolts to the frame ( 4 bolts ) I tightened the bolts, which helped, but I still have a bit of leak. I assume there is a gasket between the pump and the...

    skidding tongs

they are advertised in the 2010 Catalog specials in the insert flyer back in the Index section pages 146-147. I just bought a pair of the 20" tongs- they are also listed on the website. Figured I couldn't go too far wrong for 40 bucks.

    Lopi Flue questions.

Sorry to hear about your problems. I am on my second season with my Lopi Answer insert, and other than wishing I had a bigger stove, I love it. I have a zero-clearance fireplace with a 9" triple wall SS chimney. My installer insisted is was OK to just go into the existing flue with a 3 ft...

    Used Stove and Tax Credit

Does anyone know if used stoves would qualify for the 30% tax credit? I have a one year old Lopi Answer for sale privately and it would be a nice incentive for the buyer. If it does not, a person would be better off going new or a least would have to buy the used stove at a big discount !

    Muddy rounds....

I cut up a couple of nice ash trees down by the creek this spring, and left them lay for a few days until I could get them picked up. Low and behold, due to wet weather, next thing I knew it was 2 months later, the creek had been out of banks several times, and the rounds had been under water...

    Cleaning wood stove glass doors

Only time I get much black on glass door is when a log rolls down and burns right against it. I use Rutland glass cleaner, a rag, and dip the rag in ash. I like a really clean window to watch the fire
