    Craigslist laughs

8' in diameter is pretty dang big. There's a lot of wood in there if it is any length at all. I had some 3' diameter trees on my property that I know had more than a cord of wood in them. Of course, they were also well over 100' tall. My guess, though, is the person giving the wood away meant...

    Anything Homelite XL-12

Had one of these as my very first saw. I bought it used and knew *nothing* about chainsaws or 2-stroke engines. I did know that you needed to mix oil in with the gas, and the people I asked, they just said put in a little bit of oil. So, off to the store I go, and I found chainsaw bar oil...

    firewood length in bucking

Even easier, my bar on my limbing saw is 16", so I could just use that mark. And I used to do that (still do if it is a short log), but the Mingo is so much faster, easier, and more accurate. Swinging that saw back and forth 90 degrees gets old real fast. Another bonus is that if I'm not on...

    firewood length in bucking

The wood stove in the house can take up to 20" pieces but prefers the 18" pieces, and really likes 16"-18". My wood stove in the shop maxes out at 18" and prefers 16". The absolute worst thing is when I have people "help" me cut firewood and I end up with 22" pieces. I then have to cut off at...

    Honey locust whats the verdict

+1 on the Black Locust. That stuff burns forever. The only downside is that it is HEAVY, and hard on the chains. It seemed like I was re-sharpening every 15 minutes. It might have just been the sandy soil it was growing in, though.

Total greenhorn struggling w/ every saw i own, please help....??!!!

Does it run with the gas cap off? If so, then the vent hole is plugged and you need a new cap (or clean the vent hole on the old one).

    Wood Hauler Pics

I did the same thing for a few years before I got my tractor, and I still use this setup to haul wood from my main stacks to the area under the deck next to the back door. It takes about 6 loads to haul a full cord. The biggest problem I had was that I was getting stuck too often. I got the...

    Yet another creosote question...

Very close to accurate, and good post. If you have visible smoke (rare with EPA stoves), then the above applies. Creosote is actually unburned parts of the wood and is a result of incomplete burn. If you have no visible smoke, you're getting a fairly good burn and won't have creosote...

    New vs. Used 200t

I paid $300 for my 200T used. In theory it was about 6 months old. I never checked up on that, but compared to $639 new, a like new for $300 was a no brainer.

    Craigslist laughs

I would generally agree with you - it can be very frustrating. But then again, it is the clueless ones who will also offer up the "cahin saywr, $50" and you call to find out what it is and end up with a nice 046 that you offer them $35 for, and they are happy to accept.

    Can somebody explain this?

I'd guess sharpening. Make sure all the teeth are the same length, and make sure the rakers are filed correctly. Whenever my saw starts pulling to the side, it is usually an issue with the rakers. Regards, -Steve

    Woodsplitter hauler update

I've thought about doing that, but how do you put it back on the trailer when you have a full load of firewood? My splitter stays at home... I've got a Fiskars and a splitting maul that fit behind the back seat of the truck just fine.

Alaskan Mk III Height adjusters ?

Along with the set up blocks, use a cordless drill to loosen / tighten the bolts. Really speeds the process up.

Locust was invented for firewood...and posts

Man, that black locust is *heavy* though. Blew me away how heavy it was. I found that when splitting with a hydraulic splitter it is very stringy, much like birch. When splitting with a maul it doesn't seem to have that problem.

Yes, generally, 40A will run on 8AWG. It really depends on a large number of factors. How long the cord is, whether it is in the wall vs. out in the open, duty cycle, etc. etc. Most safety stuff / permits / that kind of stuff will give you a 2x to 4x safety margin. I've got a 240V 50A...
