mo',

All of what you say is true, if only he hadn't came into the thread trying to be funny, telling everyone he bought a chainsaw from a crack head in the ghetto.

To add fuel to the fire, he then follows it up with post #50.

The first rule of thumb on the internet, "when your in a hole, quit digging".:chainsaw:

Thanks for the support! Tool I agree what he said did get everyone stirred up!
But it is still no different than the millions of items sold daily by people needing money, and I still think its wrong to label it stolen because it came from gary!

I love how a bunch of hypocrites jump on a guy that got a good deal ! And why because it came from Gary indiana ! Talk about racial profiling ! You guys amaze me! It would have been fine if he had bought it from a good ole boy in the woods, gimme a break what a joke!

The issues here have nothing to do with it being in Gary Indiana.

  1. the price was less than half of market value
  2. the item is a professional tool in the hands of someone who has never ran a saw
  3. there were drugs involved
  4. the buyer himself says he thinks the tools he bought were stolen

Those factors have zilch to do with racial profiling.

I wonder how folks would ever come to the conclusion he bought it in Gary, In., or even that he bought it from some crack head in the Ghetto over there...

Oh wait, it was the original post.

And to reiterate, it would have been fine from the beginning had the OP not put the title on this thread they he did, but it was Greg's choice to announce his find like he did. It was also his choice to follow up with post #50.

No loss to me, I didn't buy the saw, I didn't try to be funny and put my foot in my mouth (although I'm fully capable and have done it before;)), nor did I keep digging when I was in a hole (although I am fully capable of that also;)).

I'll one-up 'ya and say that Greg would have been fine had he posed the thread in another way, and wouldn't have found himself in a hole to begin with. :eek:uttahere:

What a bunch of BS Half the tools in my garage were bought at less than half of market value! Ever heard of an auction?
How do you know who has ran a saw? How do you know someone who did run a saw didnt trade it to this guy for drugs!
Its called free American trade system!
And because the buyer says he thinks it might have been stolen, and he was trying to be funny!
Keep trying the log your on is sinking!

In this case it is different, if nothing else only because of his position on the purchase from the start.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss, and had he not mentioned it he wouldn't have incriminated himself. But because of what he said, I have to say that space is spot on for this situation.

I don't know any of that. What I do know is that the buyer thinks it was stolen, and the story is completely consistent with a stolen item. Those are the facts.

Look at the other thread where the guy got a truck load of j-reds off CL. Seems to me that could be similar, but the way it is posed, everyone is jumping around high-fivein' each other for his score. Nobody is suspecting those j-reds are stolen.

It's like telling a joke, it's all in the delivery! ;) Maybe Greg will learn to have better delivery the next time he tries to make a funny...maybe not...but chances are he's learned some important lessons with this thread. If nothing else, sometimes too much information is a bad 'thang...;)

How many reading this thread have put yourselves in Greggs shoes and asked yourself what you would have done? I'm having trouble answering that if you want to know the truth. Now fess up! I sure don't take the position that I don't care if it's stolen and would buy it even if it were. But what should/would you really do? Write the serial number down and go have it checked out before making the deal? Contact the original owner and see if it was stolen from him? If not, then there's no further way to track it.

I didn't know he bought it at an auction? Oh wait he didn't he bought it in the ghetto. Stop drinking the the gas! Your sounding more ignorant each post.

I think most of the issue is how he posted it up on this thread.

Hard to say, I probably would have responded to the CL ad, first off.

I know that everyone is looking for a good deal, I don't think any of us are different in that regard, especially on a nice saw.

The root of the whole problem is that even if it is a stolen saw, chances are it will not show up as stolen because the person may not have filed a police report, or even if they did, they didn't know the serial number on the saw that was stolen.

You get some great deals on smashed saws, I doubt those are stolen, but the situation is entirely different.

FWIW, I did walk away from a compressor that the seller seemed shady on, in a lousy area of town, with buddies that I wouldn't hang out with...that evening I got home and found another ad on CL and got an almost new Devilbliss 60 gal. compressor for $250. I was happy, and really happy I didn't do the deal with the previous guy...sometimes your karma runs over someone else's dogma, in a good way! ;)

LMAO!!!!!!! ignorant is a big word!

Here you go. Dont say I did help anyone out today.

–adjective 1. lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned: an ignorant man.
2. lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact: ignorant of quantum physics.
3. uninformed; unaware.
4. due to or showing lack of knowledge or training: an ignorant statement.

The root of the whole problem is that even if it is a stolen saw, chances are it will not show up as stolen because the person may not have filed a police report, or even if they did, they didn't know the serial number on the saw that was stolen.

Like I mentioned earlier, any newer saw is registered by the selling dealer in the original owners name. You should be able to contact that person and see if the saw had been stolen from them or if they no longer owned it.

In a similar situation, approaching the given address for the sale and seeing what was described, i would have walked away. Probably report it to the police.
Whatever the legitimacy of the saw. It might well have been an honest buy, the seller was clearly involved in crime and i wouldnt want to give them the benefit of my hard earned in any way.
If it happened here, and the police turned up investigating thefts with details of stolen saws, it matched, then they take the saw and reunite it with the owner or insurance company. You`ve lost the saw and your money.
The next thing they look at is if you were just an innocent buyer or `handling stolen goods`. To prove that, there has to be some knowledge that it was stolen, or it be so obviously stolen that the `reasonable man`would think it so.

Lose on three counts:
1. No saw
2. No money
3. Possible charges

Any parallels in US law?

Greg bought the saw from a legitimate selling organ:CL.Not under the table of a seedy bar.(although the reality was similar)
He paid a great deal less than value. This happens anyway.

I`d like to think that Greg just told what he hoped was an amusing story with a few embellishments for the benefit of the learned members, but it came across as something different to the `reasonable man` ie the members.

At some point i would hazard a guess we`ve all bought stolen goods quite innocently in complete ignorance. Its the knowledge thats the test of honesty.

:buttkick: To all the guys giving you a hard time!

This world is not perfect by a long ways and you gave 300 bucks for that saw. You didnt steal it or try to steal it, you cant go around spending your whole life searching to see if someone has been wronged in the past. That saw could have been sold for a million diff reasons but what ever the reason was it would have been sold no matter what. You bought it use it and dont be ashamed of it , all this stuff about you should feel guilty is complete BS you dont have any reason to believe the saw is other than logit. And as far as that goes what about when someone on here buys a saw from some poor dude needing money to pay rent and gets it for less than half what its worth ,everyone applauds him! Whats the diff!

the diff is--they didnt get the saw--and they are jealous, and can think of 10,000 reasons why he shouldnt have got the deal----:dizzy::dizzy::dizzy:
