Since freebee's don't count. Last spring my wifes friends uncle died and she paid me $200 to clean out his garage. A couple trailer loads to the dump, a couple more to the thrift shop. Then she said I forgot to through away the 2 old no good saws. They both had tags on them from tune ups. Both Homelite, one little red XL that looks like the 150, that I gave to my UPS buddy. Little bugger runs like a top. The other was a blue and white XL12. When you put a shot of mix in it it fires right off but won't keep running. I haven't had time to play with it yet. She also made me haul off 2 double bladed axes, ones a short handled Plum that's great for throughing, and a pile of hand and garden tools, a John Deere self propelled mower and an Ariens 6 hp weed eater on wheels. I was like a kid in a candy store and my wife is just shaking her head, Joe.

I bought an 064 PHO from my stihl dealer. Brand new carb and he said it needed P/C. I bought new rings and put the like~new P/C back on and it runs great. I got $80 in it now!!:clap:Steve

bought an 084 for $150 came with a the origional 36 inch bar and chain 3/4 tooth and a brand new 48 inch bar and chain put a head gasket piston and rings so i have $300 in the saw

Now, before you get too worked up, hundred, if not thousands, of dollars was spent on parts to make these saws what they are today. Many are not the free deal they appear to be. Others are.

Best deal here was a $50 070. First and only CL find so far. In pretty good shape, other than needed clutch shoes. Also came with a bow bar.

Nicest part of this deal wasn't the saw though. Contacted the seller and agreed I'd be first in line for the saw. He was asking $30. Went the next day, and he told the story of how people were offering him 100s for the saw, but his word meant more than the money. I'd already decided to give him $50, since even that was too good of a deal, and had to push him to take the extra $20. Its rare this day to meet someone who honors their word like this. So far, this is the only Stihl at our house, and I'll never get rid of it just for the memory of this wonderful person.

Persistence Pays

Last spring I got an 034 runner -- but a bit harsh cosmetically for $20 responding to a CL ad. Cleaned it up and a minor rebuild and it has cut over three face cords of ash and oak. In total I have maybe $75 in the saw.

More recently I got another 034 and an MS 390 from a saw shop for $20 each. Unfortunately with other things going on, the holidays and it has been so bleepin cold outside I have not had a chance to really get out there and dig into them.

Perhaps a derivative of this thread would be; what's the WORST deal you ever got on a saw? But in some ways has been covered with eBay and other related horror stories.

041AV for $50 on CL.

Needed a clutch and sprocket. The 16" bar/chain was shot so I replaced it with a 24" and LGX. He was selling it because "a 16" bar is too short for him so he was going to buy a new saw". The look on my face had to be priceless.

It has since needed a carb kit, fuel hose, starter rope and rewind spring.

A year later, I have a little over $200 in it. Can't really count the stuff I did a year later in the initial cost though.

how about a 257 Husqvarna that I purchased new from Norther Hyd for $184 and change. I worked there after High school, and when items went on close out, we got about 40% off if I remember correctly. Darn good deal if I just used it for 10+ years and it died, but I sold it last summer for $180! This was after a couple of bars and about 6 cords of wood a year, and some trail clearing. Don't think I will have that kind of result with any of my other saws, thats for sure.
