Picked up a 028 Super last week for $20. It ran, it needed a starter pawl kit and the spool that winds the starter rope, and someone had run it with no clutch springs and the chainbrake on. Melted the side cover and the oiler gear. I put on a good used sideplate, good used oregon rim sprocket kit with clutch, and a good used oiler gear. Made a new tank vent to replace the cracked one, put a new MS260 style fuel line in it to replace the suspect one, and swapped in some good used starter parts. All in all I have around $50-$75 in a sweet running 028 super, not counting the bar and chain, I already had them on hand.

The 038 super I picked up the same day for $100, it was dirty, missing the carb, tank vent, and plastic handle cover. I bought a used handle cover, slapped on a Tillotson carb I had on hand, and made a tank vent for it and it runs like a champ too. Again, it was a bar and chain I already had on hand. I have around $125 in it, so I have two good running saws for somewhere in the $200 ballpark.

I was given this 266 by the previous owner because it had scored two pistons & he was tired of dealing with it. Sat in my shed a couple years before I finally worked on it. Basically a new piston & my time is what I have in it. Seems to be running good, a welcome addition to my collection.

Super XL from 1983, that I can determine from the serial number. The Super EZ Automatic I can't date from the s/n, and the XL can't possibly be from 1978 as the s/n suggests, can it? Any dating help would be appreciated. So many project saws, so little time! Thanks for watching! O
I started with the Super XL. The air filter was missing, and the sprocket was not moving freely. I disassembled the sprocket/clutch, cleaned up some light rust, greased, and reassembled. Problem solved. Regarding the other issues with this saw, I ordered a new air filter; that's it! I added fuel and bar oil and went out cutting! It started easily (I borrowed an air filter from another SXL.), and it cut and idled just like it should. I don't think I even touched the carb settings (I spent plenty of time doing carb adjustments today, but I think that was all on another project that's on my bench).

With this addition to my herd of SXLs, I now have a 1983, a 1985, a 1991 and a 1992. All run, last time I checked. The paint could be better, but it's not bad for 40 yrs old! It even came with a fairly new,, relatively sharp chain.
Thanks for watching! T-A

Free MS194T. In-laws found it in their corn field this spring where a local drunk/druggie ditched his truck. Put fresh gas in it today and it popped right off and ran good. Chain cover was jammed full of oily brush so probably not tree service use. Possibly the drunk curb picked it judging by the other stuff that flew out with it. Bar is bent but it had one of those power sharp bar and chains on it so not much loss.

Picked up a little Husky 350 for $50
Missing pull and top cover and a muffler. I have the covers and it looks like aftermarket mufflers are cheap. Really dirty but motor turns freely, no scoring via the exhaust . Has a 20" .325 bar and chain in restorable condition.

All stripped down and cleaned up. Case top is melted so trying plastic jb weld on that.
Muffler holes...one is oversize so no big deal but the other was tapped to 8x1.25, lol
Gonna tig that, redrill/tap and see what happens.
Everything else seems ok.20230724_163937.jpg20230721_184828.jpg20230718_174610.jpg20230718_174602.jpg

This story does not have a fairytale ending! While the saw ran and idled well for the first few minutes, it soon went south. I investigated the carb, and it needed a kit. I ordered and installed the carb kit, but the saw still refused to idle properly. To prepare the saw for pressure/vacuum testing, I pulled the muffler and found substantial scoring on the piston. So, now I have three running Super XLs and a parts saw! Yes, I know I have what it takes to fix this saw, but I've already stolen one or two parts to improve my other saws. As a parts saw, I still got my money's worth, but it dropped way down on the "You Suck" scale! O

I believe I earned a "You Suck" when I really wasn't expecting it. For $1, I got a brand-appropriate bar cover for my Jonny. From this: 20230731_174614.jpg
I graduated to this:

For another $2, I got these (the YOU SUCK part):

The lot included these two complete sets:

And a few stragglers:

After a little cleaning and sorting, I did some price checking on line. The PROTO set sells for $75, the WRIGHT set for $100, the 14mm ARMSTRONG for $32, and the 6 inch long S-K for about $20. Best of all, I actually didn't already own the metric variety of these hex drivers! Makes me yearn for the next garage sale! Thanks for watching! O

Picked up a Sachs Dolmar 112 last week. Said it was running til it wasn’t. Clean points, new fuel lines, and some carb diaphragm I had on hand. Running like a champ. I know it’s nothing fancy and not a logger saw. Got $50 in it.

$100 running Stihl 041 from a friend. I didn't steal it, but I think my friend gave me a good deal. He bought it new in the '70s. He's 73 and switched to electric. Here it is as I got it:20230804_144229.jpg

And after I removed my friend's foam-and-duct-tape anti-vib mods and gave it a quick cleaning:

It runs, idles, and cuts, but I'll likely grab my 036 for daily use or my 009 for small jobs. Thanks for watching! O
